Equality Kansas is a unified statewide group of fair-minded people who are determined to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. We seek to ensure the dignity, safety and legal equality of all Kansans. The members of this group represent the South Central Chapter of Equality Kansas.

As Pride Month continues, we want to highlight Katherine Lee Bates, the woman who wrote "America the Beautiful." What many people don't know is that she spent more than 25 years sharing her life with Katharine Coman, a fellow professor and reformer. While people used different language at the time, many historians today recognize their relationship as part of LGBTQ+ history.

Bates was also a champion for education, workers' rights, and social justice. Her story is a reminder that LGBTQ+ people have always been here, contributing to our communities and helping shape our country, even when history books didn't always tell their stories.

That's why learning q***r history matters. These stories aren't new. They're just finally being told. And now that you know a little more about Katherine Lee Bates, go listen to "America the Beautiful" again. Does it hit a little differently?

A rally hosted by Equality Kansas will take place at 1100 on Saturday, June 27 at the Old Sedgewick County Courthouse, 504 N. Main. We will have several speakers before the kickoff of the Wichita Pride Parade.

Equality Kansas will be walking in the parade. The first 14 to join us for the walk to Century II will receive a button for for admission to Pride. You must walk with us the full route to get your button.
