The future of assistive technology is bright, with students from Wichita State University College of Engineering leading the way.
CPRF's Wheelchair Clinic was proud to sponsor a senior design project by a team of computer science majors developing software for an Autonomous Safety Wheelchair (ASW). Using the base of a donated wheelchair system from CPRF, some of the tech the team explored included:
• LiDAR sensors — Light Detection and Ranging lasers used to map obstacles
• ROS2 Nav2 — an open-source navigation framework that enables mobile robots to autonomously plan and follow safe paths
• PID control (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) — feedback systems that improve motion stability and responsiveness
At this stage of development, the project provided a great opportunity for research and testing. Lead-ahead and follow-behind modes were introduced to support safer, more independent navigation alongside a caregiver. Joystick-emulated analog control helps preserve the wheelchair’s original safety hardware. John Cuffe, Vice President of Technical Services, and Greg Carpenter, Seating Technician, swung by the College of Engineering Open House last week to catch up with the team.
Congrats to Sejun Moon, Brenda John, Brian Pham, Brisa Mendez-Castaneda, and Lyla Ott on their hard work and exploration of this technology!
