Any death is difficult for a child to understand, but a loved one's death by su***de adds layers of difficulty. Be open and honest if they have questions and show that it's okay to talk about how their loved one died.

September is Su***de Prevention Awareness Month. At Kidzcope, we recognize the unique and often complicated grief that follows the loss of a loved one to su***de. Children and families may carry questions, emotions, and pain that can be difficult to put into words.

Kidzcope provides a safe, compassionate place where children and families can share their experiences, find understanding, and navigate grief together. By creating space for honest conversations and helping reduce the stigma surrounding su***de, we remind grieving children that they don’t have to carry their grief alone.

Make Time for Fun, Friendship, and Play. After a death, favorite activities, weekend routines, and special traditions may feel different. Children and teens may miss the moments they shared with the person who died, and those changes deserve to be acknowledged.

When school and daily responsibilities feel overwhelming, time for recreation and connection can support healing. Consider simple ways to help your child make space for joy:

• Plan a favorite activity or low-pressure outing.
• Invite trusted family members or friends to help create fun moments when time, energy, or resources are limited.

Make room for both grief and the ordinary joys of being a child, including laughing, playing, and spending time with friends.

After-school routines can hold many memories.

Talk about after school. Just like drop-off and pick-up, the activities that happen after the school day may look different after a death. A child may miss having a snack and going to the park with their grandmother. A teen may miss stopping by a friend’s house to work on homework with someone who is no longer there.

Take time to talk with your child about what they will miss, what feels hardest, and what they might want to change or keep the same. Creating a new after-school plan together gives children and teens a voice in how they move forward.
