Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center works with individuals and communities through comprehensive services and education to create a culture of intolerance for sexual violence and an atmosphere of healing for those impacted by it. Sexual violence violates a person’s trust, autonomy, and safety. At the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center, we recognize that sexualized violence occurs anytime someone is

forced, manipulated, and/or coerced into any unwanted sexual advances or activity. The range of sexual violence includes rape, child sexual abuse, incest, date and acquaintance rape, statutory rape, marital or partner rape, commercial sexual exploitation, human trafficking, voyeurism, and sexual harassment. The victim advocates at Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center are professionals trained to support sexual assault survivors through the aftermath of a sexual assault. Whether the assault happened an hour ago or 25 years ago, advocates can offer victims information, emotional support, and help finding resources. We provide a wide range of advocacy services. As a survivor of sexual violence, you deserve advocates who will listen to you with compassion. We will listen, and we will believe you. With your permission, your guidance, we will offer all appropriate support. Please remember. You control all of our advocacy services. You’re in charge. Always. We continue to move forward and strive towards our vision of a community free of the occurrence and threat of sexual violence.

We’re honored to introduce Mandy, a dedicated member of the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center’s Board of Directors and Associate General Counsel for Textron Financial Corporation.

Mandy’s connection to WASAC’s mission is deeply personal. As a survivor of sexual assault, she understands how important it is to have a safe place to turn and someone to call during one of the most difficult moments of your life.

“I used the services of a similar organization when it happened to me. I wanted to help ensure that other survivors have access to the same support, compassion, and resources that helped me through my own experience.”

What Mandy values most about WASAC is its commitment to meeting survivors wherever they are in their healing journey—without judgment or pressure.

She also hopes more people will recognize that the effects of sexual violence do not end when the immediate crisis is over. Trauma can change how someone experiences trust, safety, relationships, and everyday situations. Healing takes time, and survivors deserve consistent support, understanding, and care for as long as they need it.

What keeps Mandy hopeful is seeing the difference that compassion can make:

“When survivors know they are safe, supported, and not alone, healing becomes possible.”

Outside of WASAC and her legal career, Mandy enjoys running, participating in CrossFit Wichita, volunteering, traveling, and occasionally finding herself on an aviation adventure.

Her message to anyone considering supporting WASAC is simple: every act of support matters. Whether you donate, volunteer, raise awareness, or share information about available resources, you are helping ensure survivors in our community always have a safe place to turn.

When asked to describe WASAC in one word, Mandy chose Safe.

Thank you, Mandy, for sharing your story and using your voice, leadership, and compassion to help other survivors feel believed, supported, and never alone.

We’re proud to introduce Shelley Gillen of INTRUST Bank, President of the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center’s Board of Directors.

Shelley chose to serve with WASAC because she believes every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and treated with dignity.

“What means the most to me is helping survivors be heard. Sometimes that means speaking up on their behalf, and other times it means helping them find and use their own voice.”

Shelley deeply values WASAC’s survivor-centered approach. Rather than defining what healing should look like—or how long it should take—WASAC listens, believes, and walks alongside each survivor throughout their individual journey.

She also reminds us that supporting a survivor doesn’t require having all the answers. Sometimes the most meaningful response is simply listening without judgment, believing them, and letting them know they are not alone.

Shelley believes community support is essential to keeping WASAC’s advocacy, therapy, crisis response, and educational services available at no cost to survivors.

“Every donation of time or money represents a community member saying, ‘You matter, and your healing matters.’”

A lifelong Wichitan, Shelley has worked for INTRUST Bank for 25 years. Outside of WASAC, she enjoys spending time with her husband and two sons, participating in community events, and exploring local farmers and vintage markets with her teenager.

Thank you, Shelley, for your compassionate leadership and steadfast commitment to ensuring survivors feel safe, supported, heard, and empowered.

Today, we are excited to introduce Gigi Tsontos, LCSW, MPA, PCC, and CEO of NOMV as a valued member of the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center’s Board of Directors.

For Gigi, serving on the WASAC board is about one simple but powerful idea: showing up for others.

She shared, “I believe giving back means showing up—especially for the underserved. I am honored to know that my small contribution helps survivors as they move through their journeys.”

Gigi is inspired by the compassion she sees every day at WASAC, where staff and volunteers work together to create a supportive community for survivors of sexual violence and their loved ones. When asked to describe WASAC in one word, her answer was “Connection.” It’s that sense of connection that helps remind survivors they are not alone.

Her message to anyone considering supporting WASAC is one we can all carry with us:
“No matter how big or how small, your time, talent, and treasure make a difference.”

This week, several members of the Wichita Area Sexual Assault Center team had the opportunity to attend Building a Better Toolbox: Tools for Supporting Crime Victims with Disabilities, presented by Pam Malin.

We're grateful for the opportunity to learn, grow, and strengthen our ability to meet survivors where they are. Thank you to Pam and the self-advocates from Self Advocate Coalition of Kansas for sharing their expertise and equipping attendees with practical tools to better support crime victims with disabilities.

While we were in Lawrence, we also made a couple of fun stops to visit local businesses!

We met two more Cats Against Catcalling: Dave at Wonder Fair and Dean at The Raven Book Store. Dean even posed with The Raven's display of Disability Pride Month books!
