Last week, members of the WABA and the Kansas Building Industry Association joined industry leaders from across the country in Washington, D.C. for the National Association of Home Builders Legislative Conference and Spring Leadership Meeting.

The week in our nation's capital provided an opportunity to advocate for housing affordability, workforce development, regulatory reform, immigration reform, and other issues that directly impact the building industry and our local communities.

Thank you to our members who represented south-central Kansas and helped ensure our industry's voice was heard on Capitol Hill. We look forward to continuing our work with Senator Jerry Moran, Senator Roger Marshall, M.D., Congressman Ron Estes, Congressman Tracey Mann, Representative Sharice Davids and Representative Derek Schmidt.

Congratulations to Walk Your Plans Wichita on an incredibly immersive ribbon cutting event and open house! This first-of-its-kind business for our region offers life-sized floor plan projection experiences that allow homeowners, builders, designers, and project teams to literally walk through their plans before construction begins.

This cutting-edge visual approach helps clients make confident decisions, visualize spaces at full scale, and avoid costly changes later in the building process. We’re thrilled to welcome Walk Your Plans Wichita to our community and look forward to seeing their impact on the construction and design industries throughout the region.

We enjoyed hosting WSU’s Local Government Network, an organized group of city managers, as well as development and planning directors across south-central and southwestern Kansas. Attendees were presented with economic and historic data provided by Tim and Owen Shigley, of Shigley Construction. The presentation was followed by a valuable Q&A discussion.

These conversations are important because they bring together the public and private sectors to share perspectives, identify challenges, and work toward solutions that benefit residents and future homeowners alike. Open communication and collaborative relationships between local government leaders and the building industry help ensure that communities can continue to grow responsibly, address housing demand, and create an environment where families and businesses can thrive.

Thank you to Kathy Sexton, Senior Management Consultant for the Local Government Network, and to the Shigleys for the in-depth presentation.

Thanks to Karl Eckhart, National Association of Home Builders VP for State & Local Government Affairs, for traveling to Wichita to put on the course. And we appreciated the opening remarks from Sedgwick County Commissioner Ryan Baty and Wichita Mayor Lily Wu!
