I am so excited to introduce the Thunderbird Stylez @ Marshall student staff! These talented individuals are working hard and giving 100% in class as they prepare to enter the cosmetology world. They will be developing and demonstrating professionalism, excellent customer service, and hands-on skills. We are still in the learning and creating phase, but we would love the opportunity to practice. If you are interested in being a model for one of our services, please let me know.

When we talk about how the bond could affect property taxes, we use the median Wichita home value — just over $200,000 — as our common example.

Question 1 asks voters to approve $407.1 million in bonds. If this passes, the tax rate stays exactly where it is today. Homeowners would not see any increase in what they currently pay, unless their property valuation increases.

Question 2 asks voters to approve $207.9 million in bonds. If this passes, the property tax rate would increase, adding about $50 a year — just $4.16 a month — for the owner of a $200,000 home compared to what they're paying now.

We've heard from the community throughout this process, and $50 a year is a threshold that a majority of Wichitans have told us they'd support.
Here's what that looks like across a range of home values.

This student was the first to sit in the Thunderbird Stylez @ Marshall chair! She was an absolute delight! We gave her natural curls a little Miche Gel to Foam, and will give her two cornrows in the morning! Big things are occurring in Thunderbird Stylez @ Marshall.

Marshall Families:
Just wanted to share that this year's annual Expanding Your Horizons STEM day at WSU will be Saturday, October 10th from 9am-2:15pm. This free event is only for middle school students and parents are welcome to stay for an optional WSU Admissions presentation and campus visit. Lunch is included and right now students would need their own transportation to campus. The keynote this year is a geochemist who will talk about teeth and skeleton formation. If you have any STEM-focused students, this is a pretty cool event! I hope it has been an awesome start to the school year.

Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) is a half day event primarily for girls in middle school. This fourth annual half-day event will include hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

AMAZING THINGS HAPPENING AT MARSHALL see post from our Cosmetology class teacher Ms. Smith below:
Thunderbird Stylez @ Marshall is a student-run cosmetology salon made possible through the United Way Dwane Wallace Grant. The grant has given us an opportunity to provide students with the foundational knowledge and hands-on experience they will need if they choose to pursue careers in the beauty industry.

The salon will allow cosmetology students to work in a professional-style setting while serving our school community. We are currently equipping the space with hair and barber stations, nail tables, a sit-under hair dryer, and a portable shampoo sink.

The idea for the salon began with a student in my class last year. She had an exceptional talent for hair styling and professional-quality braiding skills. One day, she suggested that we open a salon and that is how the idea was born. During monthly market days last year, students gained early experience by providing braiding and hair-tinsel services while practicing customer service.

Our long-term goal is for the salon to help fund a scholarship for a student who completes our cosmetology program and plans to pursue a career in the beauty industry. Any funds generated through the salon will support that scholarship and help keep the salon supplied.

We have also been fortunate to partner with local businesses. Sun-Mart donated flatirons and hair extensions for students to practice with. We also look forward to having a recent nail technician graduate, who attended Marshall for middle school, involved with the salon.

We are excited about the impact Thunderbird Stylez @ Marshall can have on our students and their futures in the beauty industry.

Why do schools need to issue bonds for school improvements? Bond issues are how school districts pay for new facilities and major building improvements.

Capital funds are limited and are meant for minor repairs or smaller building improvements. There is not enough money in capital to pay for new facilities.

Bond funding would free up existing capital funds that are currently being used on major repairs, allowing WPS to address facility needs across all buildings. This means bond funds indirectly help all of our buildings.
