The Wichita Fire Department was organized in 1886 when Wichita outgrew the volunteer fire companies which had protected the City since 1872. Today, the Wichita Fire Department has evolved from its original purpose of fighting fires to its

current task of providing a much broader level of emergency services to the public. Over the years, this expanded role along with a variety of community risk reduction activities and initiatives has allowed the Department to demonstrate exceptional community value. The Wichita Fire Department serves a resident population of over 366,000 people. In addition to the City of Wichita, the Wichita Fire Department also provides emergency responses throughout the metropolitan area through automatic and mutual aid agreements with surrounding jurisdictions.

Please join us in welcoming Chief Michael Mire as he begins his next chapter as Wichita Fire Department's 15th Fire Chief! Coming to Wichita from Houston, Chief Mire brings decades of experience, proven leadership, and a deep commitment to service.

A U.S. Army veteran and seasoned fire professional, he has served in New Orleans and Houston, most recently as Assistant Fire Chief of Professional Development Command. He holds advanced degrees in leadership and human resource development, along with top-tier national fire service credentials.

With Chief Mire’s arrival, WFD begins an exciting new era and we’re thrilled to have him on board. Welcome to WFD Chief Mire!!

They say you can't party like you used to, but it's our 140th birthday and we would say otherwise! Thank you to every member of the department, past and present, who helped write our story. and still ready when you need us. In 1988, Elizabeth C. “Tammy” Snow accepted a position with the Wichita Fire Department. During her 38 years in Wichita, she served as a Firefighter, Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Division Chief, Deputy Chief and Fire Chief. Tammy Snow was appointed the 14th Fire Chief of the Wichita Fire Department in November 2017, making her the first female Chief of the WFD. Today, Chief Snow hangs up her Class As for the retirement life. Please join us in wishing her a happy retirement!

🚒 A new fire station is coming to southwest Wichita!

Today, we broke ground on Fire Station 23 at Pawnee and Maize, marking an exciting investment in public safety and faster emergency response for this growing area of our community.

Hear from Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Ocadiz and Wichita Firefighters Union President Ted Bush about what this new station will mean for firefighters and the residents they serve.

Station 23 will be the first new fire station built in Wichita in more than 15 years. 🚒❤️
