I rarely post about my personal life. There are so many amazing things happening in the City that I prefer to emphasis them.
But I would like to take this opportunity to share something that happened that demonstrates what true leadership and friendship means.
My dear mom recently passed away and on August 21, we had her celebration of life in the small town in Iowa where I was raised. My mom was a force! She taught me to be generous, patient (still working on that one) and kind.
As friends and family were gathering before the service began, someone gently tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around, expecting to see a neighbor or cousin. To my shock, it was Wichita District 6 Council Member Maggie Ballard who left her home at 3:00am to make the 427 mile journey, so she could attend my mom’s service, and then return back to Wichita immediately following, another 427 miles.
People sometime speculate that the City of Wichita- Government City Council doesn’t work well together and has no cohesion. I am here to tell you that nothing could be farther from the truth. Just like in any work place, we disagree at times, but at the end of each day, we care about each other, deeply. But the only thing we care about more is moving Wichita forward.
Thank you Council Member Ballard. Your selfless act of driving 16 hours in one day to be at my side during one of the hardest days of my life will never be forgotten and truly defines your character. Grateful can’t even begin to explain how I feel for what you did for my family and me.❤️
