Construction Updates for Southwest and West Wichita

➢ West Street, Pawnee to Harry, including Pawnee and Southwest Boulevard Intersections: This project will convert West
Street from a four-lane roadway to five-lane. The project performs drainage system, waterline, and pedestrian improvements.
The intersections of Pawnee and Southwest Boulevard will be reconfigured and reconstructed.
Traffic Impact: Traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction on West Street from south of Pawnee to Harry. Pawnee is one
lane in each direction from West Street to Sheridan Street.
Estimated completion: 3rd Qtr. 2026

➢ West Street, 47th to MacArthur: This project will convert West Street from a two-lane roadway to three-lane including a
left center turn lane, curb, and drainage improvements. The project will also include a 10-foot-wide multi-use path and sixfeet sidewalk along West Street for the length of the project. The intersection of West and 47th Streets will be reconstructed
and will remain a four way stop with dedicated left turn lanes for all directions.
Traffic Impact: West Street is OPEN to two-way traffic from MacArthur to north of 47th Street (Angel Street). The intersection
of 47th and West Street is CLOSED to all traffic. Traffic is detoured to Meridian utilizing 55th Street South and MacArthur.
Estimated completion: 1 st Qtr. 2027

➢ West Street, MacArthur to I-235: This project will convert West Street from a two-lane roadway to three-lane including a
left center turn lane, curb, and drainage improvements. The project will also include a 10-foot-wide multi-use path along
the east side of West Street for the length of the project. The intersection of West and MacArthur will be reconstructed and
include a new traffic signal.
Traffic Impact: The intersection of MacArthur and West is OPEN to all traffic including southbound turning movements onto
West Street south of MacArthur. West Street is reduced to northbound traffic only from MacArthur to I-235. Traffic is
detoured utilizing MacArthur, Meridian, and I-235. Traffic will remain northbound only, north of MacArthur, throughout the
project.
Estimated completion: 1st Qtr. 2027

➢ Maize Road, K-42 to Pawnee Street: This project will perform pavement repairs on Maize Road from Pawnee to K-42.
Traffic Impact: Maize Road is reduced to one lane of traffic utilizing flagmen during work hours in the area of construction.
Estimated completion: 3rd Qtr. 2026

➢ Hoover Road, MacArthur to 34th Street S: This project will perform asphalt repairs in preparation of an asphalt overlay on
Hoover Road from MacArthur to 34th Street South.
Traffic Impact: Hoover Road paving is complete. Expect temporary lane closures during placement of pavement markings.
Estimated completion: 3rd Qtr. 2026

➢ West Street, Kellogg to Maple Street: This project will perform asphalt repairs in preparation of an asphalt overlay on
West Street from Kellogg to Maple.
Traffic Impact: West Street is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction from Kellogg to Maple.
Estimated completion: 3rd Qtr. 2026

City of Wichita Offers Cooling Centers During Extreme Heat

The City of Wichita offers several cooling centers for residents to escape the heat this coming week. Between libraries, recreation centers and neighborhood resource centers, the City has 14 different public locations for residents to visit during extremely hot weather. All centers are open and free to the public.

Beginning Monday, August 10 through Thursday, August 13, Wichita Transit will offer free, one-time use vouchers to allow riders to escape the heat and travel to one of the City’s free, public resources, including Wichita Public Libraries, recreation centers or neighborhood resource centers. Riders can pick up a voucher at the Hub, 207 S. Sycamore or by boarding the bus and advising the driver which cooling center the rider needs to get to. Riders will need to pick a cooling center along that route to avoid being charged fare for any transfers. The driver will allow the rider to board and provide them with their ticket to be exchanged at the cooling center. These vouchers must be exchanged at a Wichita Public Library, recreation center or neighborhood resource center for a return ride ticket.

Please note that Wichita Public Libraries are closed for upgrades on Monday, August 10. They will reopen on Tuesday, August 11 and offer air conditioning, technology, comfortable seating, drinking fountains, and an endless supply of learning and entertainment for all ages. Library hours, events and locations are available at wichitalibrary.org.

Wichita Neighborhood Resource Centers have water and air conditioning for anyone who needs it. Residents may come in, use the facilities and utilize computers or other resources. Residents may find our neighborhood resource centers and recreation centers at:

Residents are welcome to enjoy the eight open splash pads as a fun way to cool off. While the aquatics season winds down, Aley, College Hill, Harvest and Minisa pools are open Saturdays and Sundays only from 1–6 p.m., beginning Saturday, August 15, through Sunday, September 6.
