Mac Fire Protection provides professional fire extinguisher inspections, service and sales. We are a fully licensed and insured and located in Wickliffe, OH, serving Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga Counties. We are a family owned business that have been in the fire service for over 30 years. Jeff is a retired Firefighter/Paramedic and currently holds certifications as a Fire Safety Inspector and Fire and Life Safety Educator.

🧯 Safety Alert: A Reminder to Inspect Your Equipment!

During an annual fire extinguisher maintenance for one of our customers, our technician discovered a completely blocked nozzle. A local mud dauber had decided the extinguisher was the perfect spot to build a nest!

While we can appreciate their work ethic, a clog like this may prevent the extinguishing agent from discharging rendering the unit completely useless in an emergency.

Mud daubers and spiders frequently target fire extinguisher nozzles and hoses. Unlike spiderwebs, a tool must be used to remove mud dauber nests.

This shows us that an extinguisher can look perfectly fine from the outside, have correct pressure on the gauge, and still fail. Regular visual inspections are critical to catching these obstructions before they become a safety hazard.

🧯 WHERE ARE YOUR FIRE EXTINGUISHERS?

It's important to know where your fire extinguishers are located and how to use them when every second counts! ⏱️

Your fire inspector uses National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards to determine how many, what type and where your fire extinguishers should be located in your business. Below is a graphic that explains, but here are a few big takeaways:

📍 Location, Location, Location!
Extinguishers should be accessible and visible. Place them along normal paths of travel so they are easy to grab and use signs when needed.

⚖️ Is your extinguisher hanging up?
Fire Extinguishers must be hanging on a proper hanger. The mounting height depends on how much the extinguisher weighs:

When Mac Fire Protection walks into your facility, we aren't just there to hang a new tag. We perform a multi-point check that is mandated by NFPA10 and keeps your fire extinguishers working properly when you need them most.

Our annual ABC Extinguisher inspections include:

🧯MOUNTING & ACCESSIBILITY
Does your extinguisher placement meet local fire codes?
Is the extinguisher accessible? Not hidden behind a door or located too high.
Do you have enough extinguisher coverage for your facility?
🧯PHYSICAL SHELL INSPECTION
Checking for dents, rust, corrosion, or fire damage that could compromise the cylinder's integrity. Verifying extinguisher is not obsolete or recalled.
🧯PRESSURE GAUGE VERIFICATION
Confirming the gauge is in the "green" operating zone and the gauge is not cracked or obstructed.
🧯TAMPER SEAL & SAFETY PIN
Replacing the plastic tamper seal and ensuring the safety pin is easy to pull but secure.
🧯HOSE AND NOZZLE CHECK
Inspecting for cracks, dry rot, or blockages (like spider webs or dust) that could prevent the chemical from discharging.
🧯WEIGHT & FULLNESS
Ensuring the extinguisher contains the correct amount of fire-suppressing agent as specified.
🧯VALVE ASSEMBLY
Checking the handle and lever for ease of movement and ensuring there are no leaks.
🧯INTERNAL EXAM/HYDROSTATIC TEST
Internally servicing the extinguisher every 6 years per NFPA10
🧯INSTRUCTIONAL LABELING
Verifying that the operating instructions are legible and facing outward.

COMMERCIAL TIP OF THE WEEK: The most common violation we see during inspections isn’t always a bad extinguisher…….it’s a BLOCKED one.

In a warehouse or retail stockroom, it’s easy to stack a few boxes, or materials in front of a wall-mounted extinguisher. But in a fire, every second counts. If your employees have to move a pallet to reach the extinguisher you’re at risk.
