Thank you to the Gold Star families who loved and lost a family member while serving our great Nation. Thank you, to my friend, Retired Colonel Rob Maness, for your most recent podcast sharing memories of friends who fought for the freedoms we enjoy. These words weigh heavily on my heart today. We are forever grateful to the men and women who serve our Nation. Memorial Day is not Veterans Day; it is not about those of us who came home. It is about those who did not. It is about the empty seat at the dinner table, the missing voice in the squadron ready room, the child who will grow up only knowing their parent through stories and photographs. It is about the sacred debt we owe to every Gold Star family that carries a burden heavier than any rucksack we have ever shouldered. In an age when some would rather forget our history or rewrite it to fit modern sensitivities, I refuse. The service and sacrifice of every American who died in uniform, from the Revolutionary War to the mountains of Afghanistan, deserve our unapologetic gratitude. They did not die for political parties or fleeting causes; they died for the idea that this nation, imperfect as it is, remains the greatest force for freedom the world has ever known.

The Stone County Friends of the Libraries will commemorate the nation’s 250th birthday with “America 250: Celebrate in Stone” on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in Blaylock Park in Wiggins.

Because the event falls on the anniversary of
the Normandy landings, the day will also include a brief D-Day remembrance ceremony with historical readings, a moment of silence and recognition of local veterans.

The event will also feature educational programming like historic readings, a 1976 pop-up display, student art and essay contests, a community story booth, a community celebration to open a 1976 time capsule, and more family-friendly activities!

The program will honor service and sacrifice while celebrating 250 years of American history and the community's shared story.

This event has been made possible by Friends of the Stone County Libraries, the City of Wiggins, Stone County, the Mississippi Humanities Council, the Golden Gals, and the Pine Forest Regional Library System.

**Stay late and join the Pine Hill Social after the time capsule is opened**

You are invited to the Republican Executive Committee's open meeting, which is open to the public. Our keynote speaker is Senator Joseph (Mike) Seymour, who represents the 47th district in Mississippi, covering Jackson, Pearl River, and Stone counties. We would like to thank Senator Seymour for his efforts on behalf of Stone County and the State of Mississippi. Please join us tonight at The Pine Burr Venue, 800 Pine Burr Drive, at 6:00 pm. Senator Seymour will provide a legislative update. As always in Stone County, we encourage interaction with our speakers.
