Stone County Friends and Neighbors:

As your County Coroner, I’ve seen firsthand the tragic consequences of train accidents more than I would have ever thought. A couple of years back, stop signs were added at most all railroad crossings without lights and gates, even the one I cross more than any other, which is right here in McHenry. But, too many stop signs are still being ignored folks.

I’ll be honest too…even I’ve had to break the old habit of blowing right on through that crossing. I’ve lived here practically all my life, crossing that spot multiple times per day. And for years…tens of thousands of times…never stopping…unless the train was there. And many of those times, I never even slowed up! Oh I would “always look”…but never stopped. Well those days…are over!

I’m committing to stop every time at ANY railroad crossing where a stop sign is posted, and I’m asking you to do the same! I’m always talking about how just taking 10 seconds at intersections could save not just your life, but someone else’s too! I actually timed it, and from the time I began slowing, coming to a full stop, looking both ways, then crossing the tracks, took just 9.27 seconds.

Let’s all work together to prevent another tragedy in our community and beyond! Will you commit to stopping with me…please? I’ve heard it takes 7 days to break a habit. Well if an “old dog” like me can do it, then so can you! And who knows just how many others you and I together can effect too!

Stop. Look. Listen. I haven’t heard that in quite a while. Let’s bring that phrase back and work to save people the extreme heartache of having to bury a loved one from an accident that could have so easily been completely avoided…in under 10 seconds literally!

Yes, you can share this. You can even take my name out and put yours in, make it your appeal to those you know! Make one all your own if you will! It doesn’t matter to me because it’s not about me! It’s all about getting you and all those that I care about…to just stop.

Wayne Flurry

A Crusin the Coast participant returning home died earlier today in Stone county. 71 year old Danny Pilgrim, a resident of Heidelberg, was traveling North on US 49 in Perkinston when he experienced a cardiovascular event while driving. His vehicle slowed and glanced off a guard rail before coming to a stop. A Stone SO deputy refueling at Red Creek Market heard the noise, and went to investigate. Fire and EMS units responded quickly, transporting Mr. Pilgrim to Stone County Hospital ER. Despite all their efforts, he was pronounced shortly after 1pm this afternoon. After notification of his family, Memory Chapel in Laurel will be in charge of arrangements. Please keep the Pilgrim family in your thoughts and prayers.

With the rainy weather and changes in temps, it is important to stay up to date on immunizations and vaccines. Flu season is almost here, and some cases are already being seen. Most do not consider the flu as something deadly, but it absolutely is, especially if left untreated. It can quickly progress into a severe illness, causing a bacterial infection and even leading to pneumonia. If you or someone you know is sick with flu-like symptoms that won't subside, encourage them to go see a doctor. Obviously the sooner it's caught, the better chances you have of avoiding a worst-case scenario. The CDC recommends that everyone older than 6 months get a flu shot each year. Annually, between 3,000 and 49,000 people across the US die from flu related complications. Young children and senior adults are most vulnerable, but deaths occur in every age range. Consult your doctor for more information, and stay safe Stone County!

The skeletal remains discovered off Vestry Road in Eastern Stone County, have been taken to the MS Forensics Laboratory in Pearl, MS. Forensic anthropologists are examining the recovered items, and at this point, believe them to be those of a young to middle-aged male with a larger frame, probably a muscular or stocky-built person. Some clothing articles were recovered, and are being examined as well. The items have been in the woods for quite some time, likely prior to May of 2014 from what we can tell so far. More information will be made available as it becomes known.

If you have any information that could possibly assist in this investigation, or know anyone who does, please ask them to call the Stone County Coroner's office at 601-528-4256, or the Stone County Sheriff's Dept. at 601-928-7251.

PLEASE REMEMBER - If you discover what you believe to be human remains, DO NOT DISTRUB them! Simply call 911 to report what you have found. Thank you for your cooperation.

Contract workers marking boundary lines for the USFS, discovered human remains late Friday afternoon. The two men were making their way through a wooded area off Vestry Road when they discovered some bones, which are definitely human. They immediately notified authorities.

Sheriff's deputies, along with officials with the USFS, and the MBI Crime Scene Unit, joined the initial investigation. 2 bones, along with 3 other items, were recovered from the immediate area, and will be taken to the MS State Medical Examiner's Office for further investigation and examination. The articles have been in the area for quite some time, but it is unclear at this point just how long they have been there.

Anyone with any information that may help in this investigation is encouraged to contact the Stone County Coroner, or the Stone County Sheriff's office. Also, should anyone discover bones or remains that may be human, please do not disturb them, and notify the authorities immediately. Thanks for your cooperation!
