We were pleased to see the recent recognition of the other first responders and YMCA employee who played critical roles in saving Tom Garvey’s life. Their actions that day were outstanding.

One group that often goes unmentioned in these stories is the 911 telecommunicators who answered the initial call and began providing life-saving instructions before any unit arrived on scene. Those dispatchers are a vital link in the chain of survival, and their work that day — and every day — deserves acknowledgment.

The men and women of the Wilbraham Regional Emergency Communications Center do not seek recognition. Their focus remains on the communities they serve: Wilbraham, Hampden, Belchertown, and the surrounding areas. Quietly, professionally, and around the clock, they coordinate the response that gives patients their best chance.

To the dispatchers who handled that call, and to every telecommunicator who answers when someone needs help — thank you. Your work matters.

Wilbraham Regional Emergency Communications Center 4th of July PSA 🎆🇺🇸

“Hey Wilbraham, Hampden, Belchertown & all our coverage area patriots!

It’s the 4th of July — time to light up the sky, grill like champions, and celebrate the birthday of the greatest country on Earth.
But please, for the love of all that is red, white, and blue… don’t make us declare independence from your bad decisions.

• Fireworks going off? Awesome. Your neighbor’s trash can on fire because you launched one from the deck? Not awesome. We will know. We always know.

• That ‘harmless’ bottle rocket that just took out Aunt Karen’s prize-winning begonias? Yeah, she’s on the phone with us right now.

• If your BBQ grill starts speaking in tongues and shooting flames higher than the fireworks… maybe don’t call it ‘just a little flare-up.’

Stay safe, stay legal (you know the rules), keep the volume on your patriotism at ‘fun’ and not ‘neighbor lawsuit,’ and remember: we’re here 24/7 so you can enjoy the boom without becoming the story on tomorrow’s scanner.

Have a blast… responsibly! 🇺🇸🎇

— Your friends at WRECC (the ones who get the ‘Is that fireworks or gunshots?’ calls)

Today, we pause to honor and remember the brave men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation. Their courage, dedication, and selflessness allow us to live in freedom and safety.

As your local emergency communications professionals, we are proud to serve the Belchertown, Hampden and Wilbraham communities every day — just as so many of our veterans and active duty service members have served our country. We will never forget.

To all Gold Star families, veterans, and those currently serving: thank you. Your sacrifice and service are deeply appreciated.

May we always remember. 🇺🇸
