This Saturday, June 6th, is the American Hiking Society's National Trail Day. Commit to leaving the trails and the outdoor community better than you find them. Carry in & carry out!

National Trails Day is a chance to get outdoors, connect with outdoor community, and give back to the trails you love.

We ask that all Wilbraham residents remain caretakers of our beautiful local trail systems. If you see garbage on a trail carry it out, damage to trails, or needed cleanup reach out and let us know. We can all be stewards of the natural spaces that keep our town and its conservation efforts a central part of Wilbraham's appeal and charm.

The Open Space Committee met at the Community Garden Gazebo last night and then went on a pleasant Thayer Brook Trail hike on a beautiful night. Check it out!

Sawmill Hiking Trail is located at 215 Soule Rd, look for the new road sign installed! Sawmill Trail is ADA accessible with paths and benches installed.

Thank you to Jay Taylor and our local Boy Scout troop for clearing debris and checking on trail conditions recently on a beautiful spring day. The committee and town greatly appreciate volunteering your time.

The trek is .7 miles and is mostly flat with a gradual, barely noticeable rise in the middle and then a barely noticeable descent back to the beginning.

We will be publishing an article with more details about these projects in the future.

Attention Wilbraham hikers and trail users: Alpha-gal syndrome is now documented in Massachusetts. Concentrations of this tick borne illness are currently on Cape Cod & the Islands. Currently, though uncommon in Western MA it is best to stay informed and keep our families safe. Please see the tick infographic and Mass.gov website link below for current information.

What is alpha-gal syndrome (AGS)?

AGS (also known as alpha-gal allergy, red meat allergy, mammalian meat allergy, and tick bite meat allergy) is an allergic reaction to the alpha-gal sugar molecule found in most mammalian meat and some other products made from mammals. AGS can develop after the bite of certain types of ticks and the symptoms can be serious, and sometimes even life-threatening.

Springtime is here! Temperatures are above freezing which means tick season has started. Please stay safe on Wilbraham's many fantastic trails and outdoor spots by reviewing tick awareness and treatment below. Lyme disease is not the only dangerous tick borne illness in MA so keep yourself, family, and pets safe with a tick check everytime you've been outdoors.

Spring trail maintenance will be starting soon as well, hope to see you on the trails!
