Authorized by the Flood Control Act of 1938, East Branch Clarion River Lake is one of 16 flood damage reduction projects in the Pittsburgh District. East Branch Clarion River Lake is a key link in a system of flood damage reduction projects for the Allegheny and Upper Ohio Rivers, Clarion River Valley and especially the Boroughs of Johnsonburg and Ridgway, Pennsylvania. 2, East Branch Clarion River Lake has prevented flood damages estimated to be more than 88 million dollars. The reservoir also provides low flow augmentation during dry periods when water quality or flow is critical to reduce pollution and provide water for domestic, industrial and recreation uses downstream of the dam. Water released from the reservoir helps maintain commercial river traffic in coordination with other Pittsburgh District and Great Lakes and Ohio River Division flood damage reduction projects.

As temperatures climb, ice on the waters may still look solid but "solid ice" doesn't mean "safe ice."

Safety is predictable but frozen water isn't, especially when a current is moving underneath - such as on a river, a lake or a shoreline. Everyone is encouraged to avoid walking, driving, or anything else on ice. Remember: thin ice is hard to spot and easy to break.

If you have to wonder whether the ice is safe...it's probably not.

🦺 Stay safe & be seen for hunting season! 🦺

🍂 If you’re heading to game lands between November 15 and December 15, remember to wear at least 250 square inches of fluorescent orange on your head, chest, and back combined — unless you’re engaged in hunting or trapping activities that don’t require it. This rule includes Sundays!

🐕 Don’t forget your furry friends! Outfitting them with an orange leash, collar, or bandana helps keep them safe and visible, too.

📍 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District provides hunting opportunities at select locations as many of our facilities are adjacent to public lands in Western PA, Eastern OH, and Northern WV. Make sure to check which areas allow hunting and review the rules for each location before you go.

🔗 For full details on the fluorescent orange requirements, visit our friends at the Pennsylvania Game Commission! 🦺
