As part of its "Take Pride in Your Property. Take Care of Our County." Code Enforcement initiative, Sumter County is encouraging residents to clean up their property during Clean Sweep Sumter, a free community cleanup event designed to help residents safely and responsibly dispose of unwanted items.

Date: Saturday, August 15, 2026
Time: 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
Location: Sumter County Citizens Drop-Off Area (CDA)
Address: 819 County Road 529, Lake Panasoffkee, FL 33538

Please note: This event is open to Sumter County residents only. Participants must present a valid Sumter County driver's license as proof of residency.

The event provides Sumter County residents with a convenient opportunity to dispose of household garbage, bulky household items, yard debris, and household hazardous waste at no cost. By offering a safe disposal option, the County hopes to reduce illegal dumping, protect the environment, and help keep neighborhoods clean and compliant.

Residents are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of items that are difficult or unsafe to place in regular household garbage.

Accepted items include:
• Household garbage and bulky household items
• Tree limbs and yard debris
• Household electronics
• Automotive fluids and batteries
• Household cleaners
• Fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides
• Latex and oil-based paints
• Paint removers and thinners
• Pool chemicals
• Propane tanks (up to 25 pounds)
• Fluorescent lamps and other mercury-containing devices
• Rechargeable household batteries
• Smoke detectors
• Solvents
• Wood preservatives

Items not accepted include:
• Biological or infectious waste
• Explosives
• Radioactive waste
• Empty paint cans (these can go in your normal garbage disposal)
• Tires

Residents bringing household hazardous waste are asked to keep materials in their original labeled containers whenever possible, avoid mixing chemicals, and transport them safely in the trunk or rear of their vehicle.

"Clean Sweep Sumter is an easy way for residents to properly dispose of items that shouldn't end up on the side of the road or in our natural areas," said Deborah Snyder, Public Works Director. "Together, we can help protect our environment and keep Sumter County clean for everyone."

For event details, accepted materials, and disposal guidelines, please visit www.SumterCountyFL.Gov/CleanSweep or contact the Citizens' Information Center at (352) 689-4400.
