JUNE 9, 2026 - PRESS RELEASE - SHOOTING INVESTIGATION

(Wildwood, Florida) The Wildwood Police Department is investigating a shooting incident in the Spanish Harbor Drive Area in Wildwood, FL.

On Monday, June 8, 2026, at approximately 10 p.m., Wildwood Police Officers responded to the area of Spanish Harbor Drive in reference to a report of a vehicle damaged by the caller’s ex-husband. Upon arrival, officers located the caller’s ex-husband suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began lifesaving measures. While receiving medical aid, the victim identified Christopher Johnson, the caller’s boyfriend, as the individual who shot him.

Investigators obtained video footage from the area showing the victim damaging a vehicle with a metal object before walking away toward the exit of the complex. Johnson is subsequently observed “jogging” in the direction of the victim. Both individuals then move out of camera view for a brief period. No verbal communication can be heard between the two during that time. A single gunshot is then heard.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center with serious injuries.

Johnson has been charged with violations of F.S.S. 782.051-Attempted Felony Murder and F.S.S. 790.15-Discharging a firearm in public or on residential property.

This is an active investigation. No further details are being released at this time.

The Wildwood Police Department's Community Outreach Team had the pleasure of participating in the Bikes for Books program, visiting several local schools to fit winning students with properly sized helmets for their brand-new bicycles. 🚲

Made possible by The Villages Masonic Lodge No. 394, the Bikes for Books program rewards students for their reading achievements with a chance to win a new bicycle and helmet. The program also provides an opportunity for the Wildwood Police Department to connect with students, promote bicycle safety, and emphasize the importance of always wearing a helmet.

Congratulations to all of the lucky winners, keep up the great work!

A special thank you to The Villages Masonic Lodge No. 394 for their continued support of this outstanding program, as well as to the participating schools for helping to make it a success! 📚

🚔 HAPPENING NOW: Click It or Ticket Campaign 🚔

The “Click It or Ticket” campaign is underway through May 31, and the Wildwood Police Department is joining law enforcement agencies nationwide to promote seat belt safety and remind drivers that seat belts save lives. NHTSA's Click It or Ticket campaign focuses on the importance of seatbelt compliance through a combination of education, enforcement, and public awareness.

Our Traffic Unit and Patrol Officers will continue conducting enhanced traffic enforcement throughout the City to educate drivers and passengers on the importance of seatbelt safety.

Wearing your seat belt is one of the simplest and most effective ways to protect yourself and your passengers. Remember:
- All front seat passengers must wear a seat belt
- Children under 18 must be properly restrained, no matter where they sit
- Small children are required to be secured in approved safety seats

Proper seat belt fit matters:
✅Shoulder belt across the middle of your chest
✅Lap belt across your hips, not your stomach

Don't risk a ticket, or your life. Buckle up every time!
