Today, June 14, commemorates the adoption of the United States flag. Since a 1916 proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson, this date has been marked as “Flag Day.” Congressional legislation designating that date as national Flag Day was signed into law by President Harry Truman in 1949.

From 13 stars to 50, the American flag has been a symbol of freedom and liberty throughout the world. To learn more about the history of the American flag, click here: https://www.loc.gov/item/today-in-history/june-14

🎥WATCH: I offered an amendment this week to a bill that would further subsidize college tuition. The amendment would have simply made the grant monies contingent upon colleges in PA adopting policies. It was voted down as every member of the majority party opposed.

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is reminding those spending time in the great outdoors to leave young wildlife alone.

While some young animals might appear to be abandoned, usually they are not. It’s likely their mothers are watching over them from somewhere nearby.

When encountering young wild animals, whether deer, birds, raccoons or something else, the commission says the best thing you can do is leave them alone.

Interfering with or removing any wild animal from its natural setting can be harmful to both people and wildlife. It also is illegal to take or possess wildlife from the wild. Under state law, the penalty for such a violation is a fine of up to $1,500 per animal.

Only wildlife rehabilitators, who are licensed by the Game Commission, are permitted to care for injured or orphaned wildlife for the purposes of eventual release back into the wild.

For those who find wildlife that truly needs assistance, a listing of licensed wildlife rehabilitators can be found on the Pennsylvania Association of Wildlife Rehabilitators website, www.pawr.com.

If you are unable to identify a wildlife rehabilitator in your area, contact the Game Commission by phone at 1-833-PGC-WILD or 1-833-PGC-HUNT.

It was an honor to present a citation today to constituent and Central York School District student Avery Fan. She designed the winning York County billboard that promotes road safety!

The billboard is part of The Center for Traffic Safety’s York County “No Excuses Youth Traffic Safety Billboard Design Contest” and is now displayed along I-83 southbound between the Market Street and Mt. Rose Avenue exits.

We applaud Avery’s creativity and her commitment to raising awareness about the dangers of distracted driving. Her thoughtful design delivers an important message that can help save lives and make our roads safer for everyone.

Congratulations, Avery, on this outstanding achievement!

✅Yesterday, my HB 1877, a bill that establishes the State Seal of Biliteracy, passed the Senate Education Committee unanimously! It now heads to the Senate floor for consideration.

HB 1877 would boost job prospects and/or higher education opportunities for thousands of high school graduates who demonstrate proficiency in English and another world language.
