What is a NC Guardian ad Litem Child Advocate? Do you have a sincere concern for the well being of children? If so, apply to become a GAL Child Advocate with NC Guardian ad Litem Program. Individuals volunteer their time and are trained as child advocates for children who have been abused and/or neglected. These children and families and are involved with the local department of social services an
d NC courts. NCGAL Child Advocates work with attorneys and NCGAL staff to champion the needs of these children in court. Child advocates promote a safe and permanent home for children. The GAL child advocate gathers and assesses independent information about the child’s situation and needs. They get to know the child by having on-going communication with the child in various settings. They ask the child their wishes. Child Advocate also interview parents, caretakers, social workers, teachers, and service providers. GALs review court records regarding the child and family. They use the information they have gathered to help make recommendations regarding the child's best interest. GAL Child Advocates write child-focused, fact-based reports for court hearings making recommendations in the child’s best interest. They are willing to testify when needed to support recommendations or inform the court of changes in the child’s situation. An application, background checks, an interview, and preservice training are required before anyone can volunteer as a NCGAL Child Advocate. The preservice training includes a group orientation, six weekly virtual group sessions, and online individual activities. An advocate commits to give a average of 4-8 hours per month on the case. Apply today to be considered to volunteer your time to advocate for a child in foster care.
