Deputy Hutchens – School Resource Officer

Deputy Hutchens has proudly served with the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office since 2010, beginning his career on Patrol before becoming a School Resource Officer in 2014. Over the years, serving as an SRO has become much more than a job—it is a role he truly loves.

As a School Resource Officer within the Wilkes County School System, Deputy Hutchens has had the opportunity to work closely with students, teachers, staff, and families while helping promote a safe, welcoming, and supportive school environment. He currently serves as the SRO at Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, where he is proud to be part of the school community each day.

His presence at Mt. Pleasant Elementary goes beyond school safety—he strives to be someone students know, trust, and feel comfortable approaching.

He takes great pride in serving the citizens of Wilkes County and considers it a privilege to be part of the lives of our students and their families. His dedication to Mt. Pleasant Elementary School, Wilkes County Schools, and the entire community reflects the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office’s continued commitment to protecting, supporting, and encouraging the young people who represent the future of Wilkes County.

SCAM ALERT

BE AWARE of a paving scam going around Wilkes County. Scammers may come to your door claiming they have "leftover paving material" from another job and can pave your driveway at a deeply discounted price, but don't fall for it. This is a common scam used to pressure homeowners into making quick decisions.
Protect yourself:
• Never agree to work from unsolicited door-to-door contractors.
• Don't let anyone pressure you into making an immediate decision.
• Research contractors, ask for references, and verify they are properly licensed and insured.
• Never pay upfront.

🎒 WELCOME BACK, WILKES COUNTY! 📚

On behalf of Sheriff Chris Shew and the Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office, we would like to welcome our students, parents, teachers, administrators, school staff, and families back for the 2026–2027 school year on Monday August 24, 2026!

As students return to the classroom, Captain Wyatt and our School Resource Officers (SRO’s) are proud to stand alongside our schools and community to help make this a safe, successful, and enjoyable school year.

Sheriff Shew encourages families to take a few minutes to review some important back-to-school safety reminders:

🚌 School Bus Safety: Slow down, stay alert, and watch carefully for children near bus stops and school zones. Never pass a stopped school bus when its flashing lights are activated and stop arm is extended.

🚸 Walking to School: Children should walk with a buddy, stay on sidewalks, obey traffic signals, and use designated crosswalks.

🚗 Teen Drivers: Buckle up every trip, put the phone away while driving, and make sure vehicle insurance and registration information are current.

📱 Online Safety: Parents, check location-sharing settings on your child’s electronic devices and remind students to be careful about sharing their location or other personal information online.

🏠 Be Prepared: Younger children should know a parent or guardian’s phone number, their home address, how to reach a parent or guardian at work, and how to call 911 in an emergency.

👨‍👩‍👧 Talk About Stranger Safety: Remind children never to accept rides from people they do not know, and consider establishing a family safety code word.

To all of our students — work hard, make good choices, look out for one another, and have a great year.

To our teachers, administrators, school staff, and School Resource Officers — thank you for the work you do every day to educate, encourage, protect, and support the young people of Wilkes County.

And to our parents and families — thank you for trusting all of us who have the privilege of helping keep your children safe.

Sheriff Chris Shew and the entire Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office wish everyone a safe, successful, and memorable 2026–2027 school year!
