Papa bought this house April 7th 1885. Mama's mother was Nancy Vistal, Mama's mother died when she was sixteen years old. She was rasised by Mr and Mrs J. Ferguson of Wilkesboro. Ferguson was Mama's aunt Mary Vistal. I am named f

or her. Mamma lived in Yadkin Co. a few miles from Yadkinville, until she came to Wilbesboro. The store next door was built by J.T. Ferguson in 1887. It was a general store and Papa was a partner with. Papa paid $1055. Buddy has a handbill that tells that the house was sold by Public Auction. Mama inherited a share in this property and the deed was made to her, Lula C. There has always been a picked fence in front of the house at one time there was a fence running along side of the yard next to store building that made a drive way into the back of the store. Papa had this fence taken down, and we had a driveway in our yard, running and open to street back of that. The house use to be painted yellow with brown blinds and trim. Stephen Johnson was a merchant here and had a store in this block before the Parker Building. He also held County office, County Treasurer

This property was purchased by Stephen Johnson and Lender B. Carmichael on November 2, 1854 for $300.00. This house was built in 1855. On July 4th 1948 Mama died and I inherited this property. The only changes, two bathrooms and closet in the upstairs rooms, closet under stairs made. The date on the east chimney Sept 14th 1877. The original house was the porch – kitchen was where my flower garden is now.. You came up into the hall by steps from the outside. The kitchen had a huge fireplace on the south side with cranes to use to put pots on for cooking. There were ___ window panes- just heavy wooden shutters was flared but not sealed. When Papa bought the house the dining room, kitchen, and side and back porch were built. Mama had a room on back porch built for storage. The old smoke house house in the back yard is as it was when the house was built in 1855
Mama said she had seen the building handing full of country hams. These were sold at the Store. This is a typed copy of a handwritten copy given to us by Mr. Buddy Hubbard.

In 1836, 30-year-old Dr. James Calloway was traveling in New York City. One night he attended a show at Peale’s Museum where the Siamese Twins Eng and Chang were performing. He was curious about their story, so he arranged to meet them back stage after the show. As they talked, he learned that the twins enjoyed hunting and fishing, and that they were looking forward to taking a vacation from touring. Dr. Calloway suggested they come to his hometown of Wilkesboro for some rest and relaxation.

Three years later, they did just that. Upon their arrival, the twins liked what they saw in Wilkes County. They rented a room in Traphill, and within a year, they became naturalized U.S. citizens and soon bought a few hundred acres near Old Roaring River Baptist Church. They married the Yates sisters and had several children before moving to Mount Airy in 1845.

Dr. Calloway married Mary Carmichael in 1835. After her death in 1847, he married Annie Yeakle. He held several government positions while continuing his successful medical practice. He is recognized as the first surgeon in Wilkes County. He died at the age of 72 in 1878 and was buried at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wilkesboro.

If Dr. Calloway hadn’t talked to Eng and Chang at that New York City museum after their performance, it’s unlikely they would have made Wilkes County their home for six years. Sometimes a chance encounter at the museum can lead to life-changing events.

The photo of Dr. James Calloway is from the museum’s collection.
