This morning, members participated in a live burn with Atkinson Volunteer Fire Department. Live burns give firefighters a chance to practice and enhance their skills in a semi-controlled environment. This also allows us to train with our mutual aid partners to better serve our communities.

Alright folks, enough is enough!

THERE IS A BURN BAN IN EFFECT! That means NO BURNING of any kind. Not in a burn barrel, not in a fire pit, not your leaf pile, and definitely not your trash pile!

Please help us, help you, stay safe!

🚫🔥 BURN BAN STILL IN EFFECT. YES, EVEN AFTER THE RAIN 🔥🚫

We know… it rained. And we’re all thankful for it. 🌧️
But before you strike that match or fire up that burn pile, the burn ban is STILL in effect across North Carolina.

As of April 6, 2026, the statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service remains active for all 100 counties, including right here in Pender County.

🚫 No outdoor burning is allowed... period.
That includes:
• Burn barrels
• Yard debris
• Campfires
• Fire pits

Even with recent rain, conditions are still dry enough to allow fires to spread quickly and unpredictably.

💡 Think of it like this:
That rain was a quick rinse… not a deep soak. The woods are still ready to light up faster than your grill on game day.

We need everyone’s help to keep our community safe.

We’ll continue to keep you updated when conditions change. Until then, hold off on the burn.

👨‍🚒 Stay safe, Pender County.

Due to increased wildfire risk, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a ban on all open burning and has canceled all burning permits statewide effective 6 p.m. Saturday, March 28 until further notice.

Under North Carolina law, the ban prohibits all open burning in the affected counties, regardless of whether a permit was previously issued. The issuance of any new permits has also been suspended until the ban is lifted. Anyone violating the burn ban faces a $100 fine plus $183 court costs. Any person responsible for setting a fire may be liable for any expenses related to extinguishing the fire.

The burn ban does not apply to fires started within 100 feet of an occupied dwelling. The local fire marshal has authority to issue a burn ban within those 100 feet.
