On this day, June 8, in 1874, Chiricahua Apache leader Cochise died. As chief of the Chiricahua Apache people, he led his people through years of conflict before helping negotiate a hard-won peace. His passing marked the end of a short period of relative peace for the Chiricahua people. Today, his legacy as a skilled leader and negotiator is remembered across Cochise County.

🔥 Fire Danger Alert – Tonight Until Monsoon Season 🔥

Please be advised that the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Chiricahua National Monument today, due to gusty winds and extremely low humidity—classic conditions for fast-moving wildfires.

We’re in fire season, a pre-monsoon season, which in southeastern Arizona typically lasts from mid-May until the monsoon’s arrival in mid-June to early July. Expect dry, windy weather through this period—prime conditions for fire spread and heightened fire danger.

⚠️ What you can do (anywhere in the area):
- Absolutely no open flames tonight—not even small campfires.
- If camping, use enclosed propane stoves/grills only.
- Never toss ci******es onto roadsides.
- Be extra cautious with vehicles—sparks from dragging chains or dangling exhaust systems can ignite dry grass.
- Report any signs of fire immediately to park staff or dial 9‑1‑1.

Let’s all do our part to keep our beloved Chiricahua safe! Share this alert and spread the word. Stay safe out there!

🌎Happy International Dark Sky Week from Chiricahua National Monument! 🌠

Designated as the world’s 104th International Dark Sky Park, Chiricahua protects some of the darkest skies on the planet. 🌌 Here, the Milky Way stretches from horizon to horizon, offering a rare chance to experience the night as it has been for generations.

💡You can help preserve this incredible resource by using low-impact lighting and respecting the natural darkness that makes this place so special. Visit DarkSky.org for more you can do!

A special thank you to the Tucson Amateur Astronomical Society for hosting a fantastic star party on March 20th—we loved sharing the night sky with all of you!

To infinity... and beyond!! ✨ Spend an evening exploring the universe at Chiricahua! ✨

Join us for a special night of stargazing beneath some of Arizona’s darkest skies.

📅 When: Friday, March 20
⏰ Time: 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM
📍 Where: Faraway Ranch, Chiricahua National Monument

🔭 Hosted by: Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association & National Park Service
Our friends from the Tucson Amateur Astronomy Association will bring their telescopes and expertise to help you tour the night sky. There’s always something amazing waiting overhead - you’ll have the chance to discover planets, distant galaxies, glowing nebulae, and brilliant star clusters .

🧤 Tips for a great night:
• Dress warm: evenings cool off quickly—layers are your friend!
• Use red light: A red headlamp or flashlight helps protect your night vision. Red phone covers are available if needed.

The wildlife might be settling in for the night, but the sky is just waking up. Come see what appears after dark!

🏡 Step back in time at Faraway Ranch!

Join us for a Faraway Ranch Open House at Chiricahua National Monument. This Saturday and the following 4 Saturdays, the historic ranch house will be open for visitors to explore and learn about the Erickson family, who helped shape the history of the monument.

📅 When: Saturdays, March 14 – April 11
⏰ Time: 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM
📍 Where: Faraway Ranch, Chiricahua National Monument

Stop by to wander through the ranch house, chat with the ranger, and discover what life was like in this canyon long before it became a national monument. From ranching stories to the early days of tourism in the Chiricahuas, Faraway Ranch has plenty of history to share.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime fan of the monument, this is a great opportunity to experience one of Chiricahua’s most beloved historic places.

The house is no longer furnished but displays give an idea of the atmosphere 50 years ago.
