PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE
April 24, 2026

Last night, the Williams Fire Protection Authority responded to a single-family residence after an alarm activation and reports of smoke coming from an electric scooter that had been inside the home. Upon arrival, crews quickly assessed the situation, confirmed the source of the smoke, and safely mitigated the hazard before it could escalate.

Thanks to prior training on lithium-ion battery hazards and the purchase/use of specialized air monitoring equipment, personnel conducted air monitoring throughout the residence. This monitoring detected the presence of toxic chemicals within the residence, confirming hazardous conditions and reinforcing the importance of a prompt response.

This event had the potential to become significantly more dangerous and serves as an important reminder to our community:

Electric Scooter Charging Safety

Electric scooters are a convenient way to get around—but improper charging can pose serious fire risks.

Key Safety Reminder:
• Do not use non-original (non-OEM) chargers
• Avoid charging scooters inside living spaces whenever possible
• Using the wrong charger can cause overheating, battery damage, or even fires

These devices are designed to work with specific equipment—using substitutes is not worth the risk. Lithium-ion battery fires can ignite rapidly and may even reignite after being extinguished.

Why This Matters

When lithium-ion batteries fail, they can release toxic gases and thick, hazardous smoke that may:

• Irritate or severely damage your lungs
• Contain harmful heavy metals
• Spread quickly throughout your home
• Make fires more difficult to escape safely

Stay Safe by Following These Tips:
• Use only the original charger provided with your scooter
• Charge in a well-ventilated area, preferably outside or in a garage, away from living spaces
• Keep scooters away from flammable materials
• Never leave a charging scooter unattended or charging overnight
• Unplug the device once it is fully charged
• Watch for warning signs such as swelling, excessive heat, unusual smells, or hissing sounds
• Never use damaged batteries or chargers

If you notice anything unusual—such as excessive heat, strange odors, or visible damage—stop charging immediately. If your home becomes filled with smoke, do not re-enter and call 911.

• No utilice cargadores no originales (no OEM)

• Contener metales pesados nocivos
