Congratulations to JCCFD FF/Paramedic Stephen Rajotte and FF/Paramedic Nick Von Engel on their graduation from the Hampton Roads Fire Officer Academy last night!

The HRFOA is a regional leadership development initiative that brings together fire service professionals from across Hampton Roads to prepare the next generation of leaders. Over the course of 10 months, participants completed a program focused on strategy, tactics, leadership, communication, and the skills needed to lead effectively in today’s fire and EMS environment.

Stephen and Nick demonstrated a strong commitment to professional growth while balancing the demands of serving our community. Their dedication to developing themselves as leaders will have a lasting impact on our department and the citizens we serve.

Please join us in congratulating Stephen and Nick on this outstanding achievement and representing JCCFD so well throughout the academy!

Danielle Hannuksela, Firefighter/Paramedic at Station 3/B, recently attended a 40-hour Hazardous Materials course in Pueblo, CO. The program, hosted by the Security and Emergency Response Training Center, focused on specialist-level tactics for responding to highway emergencies involving hazardous materials. This training is important due to the amount of major highways that run through James City County.

Congratulations to Firefighter/Paramedic Hannuksela on her obtaining her Highway Emergency Response Specialist certification!

EMS Week 2026 Continues! This year marks 50 years of service for the JCCFD! Thank you to all of our EMS providers past and present!

Strong currents. High stress.

This week, members of the James City County Fire Department participated in a Water Rescue Awareness training at College Creek, reviewing the rescue sequence we use to keep both victims and rescuers safe:

Reach. Throw. Row. Go. Helo.

Training included both review and hands-on scenarios in the river, where crews practiced:

+Communicating with victims in the water
+Deploying and using throw bags
+Swimming to and controlling victims
+Safely swimming victims back to shore
+Operating and maneuvering the inflatable rescue boat

These skills require repetition, teamwork, and confidence. Training like this helps ensure our crews are prepared for the summer boating/swimming season.

A big thank you to everyone involved in making the training successful and realistic.

EMS Week Continued........We are proud to announce that Virginia Association of Counties has named James City County a 2026 Achievement Award Winner!

Out of 103 submissions statewide, only 40 programs were selected for this year’s awards recognizing excellence and innovation in local government.

JCCFD was recognized for our Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP) Program, a groundbreaking initiative bringing hospital-level critical care directly to patients in the field. From prehospital whole blood transfusions and ultrasound to ventilators, advanced airway management, and critical care procedures, our ACPs are helping redefine what EMS can do before a patient ever reaches the hospital.

This program was built with one goal in mind: improving patient outcomes and saving lives. Since implementation, the program has already shown measurable impact, including improved cardiac arrest survival rates, higher advanced airway success, and reduced helicopter utilization.

This recognition reflects the dedication of our providers, instructors, medical direction team, regional partners, and everyone committed to pushing emergency medical care forward for the citizens and visitors of James City County.

We’re honored to be recognized alongside innovative programs from across the Commonwealth and proud to continue setting the standard for advanced prehospital care. James City County
