Want to help those protesting the racial injustice and police brutality in our area? Consider donating to the Richmond Community Bail Fund. We need our brothers and sisters out on the streets marching instead of stuck behind bars for speaking truth to power!

You knocked on the doors. You made the phone calls. You cast your ballot. And you brought progressive change to Virginia last night!

A recap:

Mike Mullin for Virginia (D-93) won re-election over a dangerous reactionary.

Kelly DeLucia gave Brenda Pogge (R-96) her closest race in a decade.

Ralph Northam, Justin Fairfax for Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, and Mark Herring all won dominant victories over Trump-backed candidates.

Jim Icenhour (D-Jamestown) won back his seat on the James City County Board of Supervisors.

These are all great developments, but the final point is key for bringing progressive change to JCC. In two years, we've taken the GOP from a 4-1 majority on the Board of Supervisors to a single seat. There's no better time to lobby for the change we want to see in our community!

After nearly four years as Virginia’s lieutenant governor, Ralph Northam is projected to take the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial election, according to both NBC and CNN. Democratic candidate Northam took…

Today is Election Day in Virginia! You know what that means: we all have a chance to elect progressive candidates who will fight for the economic, environmental, and social justice of all Virginians. If you have any questions about voting today, the Virginia Department of Elections should be able to answer any of your questions.

The Williamsburg Planning Commission narrowly voted to recommend that the City Council approve a plan to redevelop the Williamsburg Shopping Center on Richmond Road. The mixed-use proposal calls for several multi-story buildings combining retail on the first floor and several stories of college student-focused housing above, along with additional green space and a 140-room hotel. What it doesn't include right now — affordable housing. What do you think?

Friends, James City County is seeking applicants for a task force to study affordable and workforce housing in the county. We need as many progressive voices on the task force as possible, and few residents ever apply for local boards and commissions. Elections are important (and are coming up soon), but if you want to get involved in local government in a more long-term capacity, consider applying for this!

ger·ry·man·der /jerēˌmandər/
verb
gerund or present participle: gerrymandering
"Manipulate the boundaries of (an electoral constituency) so as to favor one party or class. Achieve (a result) by manipulating the boundaries of an electoral constituency."

Virginia is one of the most heavily gerrymandered states in the US. Although it's a statewide issue, we can do something about it locally! James City County Supervisor John McGlennon (D-Roberts) is submitting a resolution at the August 8 meeting of the Board of Supervisors calling on the General Assembly to reform the way Virginia draws electoral boundaries to ensure that our elections are free and fair.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. If you can attend, please do — and speak in favor of the resolution. If you can't make it, please contact your supervisor. Find out who it is by visiting this website: [http://jamescitycountyva.gov/3472/Who-is-my-Supervisor].
