Who are the York County / City of Williamsburg / City of Poquoson / James City County Professional Fire Fighters, Paramedics and 911 Dispatchers IAFF Local 2498? The York County / City of Williamsburg / City of Poquoson / James City County Professional Fire Fighters, Paramedics and 911 Dispatchers is a local union representing career professional fire fighters, paramedics and 911 dispatchers of York County, City of Williamsburg, City of Poquoson and James City County Virginia. We are a local of the International Association of Fire Fighters located in Washington DC. We are also associated with the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters (VPFF), which consists of more than 80 locals representing well over 9,000 fire fighters, medics and dispatchers. Virginia Professional Fire Fighters, medics and dispatchers provide fire protection and EMS services to over 85% of Virginia’s population. As well, the VPFF members provide these and other specialized services to all of Virginia’s major airports and several military installations. Virginia Professional Fire Fighters members consist of Fire Fighters, Fire Officers, Fire Inspectors, Fire Investigators, Hazardous Materials Specialist, Emergency Medical Technicians, Cardiac Technicians, Paramedics, Training Instructors, Water Rescue Specialists, 911 Dispatchers and Homeland Security Officers. We also are members of the AFL/CIO, the Virginia AFL/CIO, the Eastern Virginia Labor Council, the National Fire Protection Agency, VPAP and NCPERS. We, along with the VPFF, and its member locals are active in many endeavors on the federal, state and local levels. Whether it’s raising money for the family of a fire fighter killed in the Line of Duty (LODD) or fighting for legislation to prevent another fire fighter from dying needlessly, our local, and the VPFF are there. Working hand in hand with the VPFF, the IAFF and local unions throughout the United States, Our Local, VPFF, and the IAFF are strong advocates in Washington DC, Richmond Virginia, York County, City of Williamsburg, City of Poquoson, and James City County for the safety and well being of fire fighters, medics and dispatchers as well as their families and the general public. Our Local, and other area locals focus on issues that are important and unique to their own needs. This may include lobbying local officials and citizens for better equipment, additional staffing, pay and benefits. We are advocates for adequate fire protection for you, your family, your home and or your business, increasing awareness of factors that will impact the Health and Safety of our members. We keep our Citizens and Business Owners aware of Public Safety Issues, and the issues that impact First Responders without Political Spin via our Annual Mass Mailer Fund Raiser letters mailed out each year around Easter Week with our Support Decal Included. We also follow up with our donors during our Previous Donor Thank You Letters sent out each year around Thanksgiving week. We also participate in many charitable organizations such as the Muscular Dystrophy Associations (Fire Fighter Fill the Boot) Fund Drive, The American Cancers Societies (Relay for Life), Summer Burn Camps for Burned Children, Charity Golf Tournaments, Childhood Diabetes Foundation, York County Safety Town just to name a few.

Show up TONIGHT to support the Portsmouth Firefighters... This evening, the Portsmouth City Council votes on collective bargaining. Wear RED and attend the City Council Meeting, which begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall, 801 Crawford St. in Portsmouth, VA.

Their message is clear: City employees deserve a meaningful voice in their pay, benefits, and working conditions. They deserve a fair bargaining process. Members, retirees, families, and supporters are invited to join the firefighters. Stand with city employees. Your presence matters!

Fair pay. Safe staffing. Reliable equipment. These issues affect the people serving Portsmouth and the community depending on them.

IAFF Local 2498's Secretary Chris D'Annibale was an invited speaker by the York County Volunteer Citizens Group recently. We can not thank this group enough for the years of support they have showed our organization. Details from the speak - On behalf of the members, retirees, and families of Local 2498, We want to sincerely thank The York County Volunteer Organization and your contributions supporting our Health and Safety initiatives.

Your contributions go directly toward two critical areas: IAFF Peer Support and cancer screenings. These programs are about taking care of the people who spend their careers taking care of others.

Peer Support is especially important to us, for at one time, York County had the highest su***de rate per capita within the IAFF. Since implementing our Peer Support program and the opening of the IAFF Center of Excellence, we have not experienced any more su***des among our members and are able to get our members the help they need to continue their careers. While we recognize that many factors contribute to mental health and su***de prevention, this is something we take seriously and are committed to protecting.

Training and certifying a Peer Support team member cost approximately $800 per person. This includes training from certified IAFF clinicians, continuing education and travel expenses. Our team is not only there for our own members; but are frequently called upon by other agencies and localities and serve as part of a regional response team to incidents in other areas and large-scale emergencies.

Cancer screenings are equally important to us. As Firefighters, we face increased occupational cancer risks, not just from fires anymore, but now from the gear designed to protect us. Research by the CDC and NIOSH found that firefighters had a 9% higher rate of cancer diagnoses and a 14% higher rate of cancer-related deaths than the general U.S. population in these studies.

Each cancer screening costs approximately $800, and we believe investing in early detection is especially important for our retirees, who deserve the same care and attention after their years of service.

Every dollar donated by the York Volunteer Organization helps us continue these efforts and ensures that our members have access to the resources they need.

For Immediate Release - York County Fire Department Responds to Mobile Home Fire in the Grafton Area; Rescues Dog

Just after 4:00 p.m. today, personnel from the York County Fire Department (YCFD) were dispatched to a reported structure fire at a mobile home village in the 1200 block of Oriana Road in the Grafton area of York County.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a fire involving one side of the mobile home. The residents had evacuated before crews arrived. Firefighters entered the structure and successfully rescued the family’s dog, which was unharmed.

The fire was quickly extinguished but caused extensive smoke damage throughout the home. No adjacent structures were affected. Firefighters remained on scene to check for hidden hot spots and to ensure the fire would not reignite.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents. No injuries were reported. Dominion Energy also responded to the scene and secured the home’s utilities.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
