School’s out for the summer.

We stopped by Mill Creek Academy today to help the students celebrate the last day of school the best way we know how, with a little water.

Engine 3 got its first opportunity to cool off a few kids, and based on the smiles and muddy shoes, we’d call it a success.

Have a safe summer, Mill Creek.

Tonight Whitewater firefighters worked on victim drags and crib dumps with Johnny Robydek from Cedar Area Fire & Rescue.

These are the skills used to move unconscious victims to safety. While simple in appearance, they are some of the most important rescue skills firefighters can have when seconds matter.

May was the busiest non-storm-related month in department history with 37 emergency responses.

• 25 EMS Incidents
• 4 Wildland Fires
• 3 Fire Alarms
• 2 Motor Vehicle Crashes

Nearly 70% of our calls were medical emergencies.

The fire service continues to evolve, but our mission remains the same: Citizens First.

Engine 3 is home.

Today, Whitewater Township Fire Department took delivery of our new engine from CSI Emergency Apparatus in Grayling. This project was made possible in part through ARPA funding approved by the Township Board and will serve our community for many years to come.

This project began under former Fire Chief Brandon Flynn and continued through the efforts of multiple Township Boards and department members as the apparatus was refined, built, and brought to completion.

Before you see it responding to calls, crews will spend the next few weeks transferring equipment, training drivers and operators, and completing final checks to ensure the apparatus is ready for service.

We’re excited to officially welcome Engine 3 to the fleet.

Today Whitewater Brush 3, Kubota 3, and Whitewater Chief responded into Union Township to assist Fife Lake Springfield Fire Department with a wildland fire.

While the fire was ultimately contained to just under one acre, it serves as a reminder that wildfire season is far from over. Even though it seems much of Northern Michigan has greened up, dry grasses, leaf litter, and dead vegetation remain capable of carrying fire quickly under the right conditions.

Please use caution with any outdoor burning and continue to follow local burn restrictions. It only takes a small spark to start a wildfire.

For the last several decades, Whitewater Township Fire Department has had the privilege of leading the Memorial Day procession from Williamsburg Cemetery to Circle Hill Cemetery. As participation numbers within our local Legion have decreased over the years, our members have stepped into a larger role helping carry the colors and supporting ceremonial duties during the event.

Service takes many forms. Today wasn’t about emergency response, it was about honoring sacrifice and preserving tradition. Several generations of community members stood together today to remember those who gave everything for our country.

We are proud to help ensure this tradition continues and honored to be part of it every year.

The fire service is in a great place right now when it comes to training. Firefighters across the country are constantly sharing ideas and different ways to improve understanding. We recently came across this concept on Instagram and decided to adapt it for use at Whitewater.

Before anyone points it out — yes, we’re still finishing the writing on it.

The idea itself is simple. Conditions inside a structure fire can change dramatically from floor to ceiling. We plan to use this during search training, victim removal drills, and even during school visits as a reminder of why staying low matters.

Not every training tool needs to be expensive or complicated. Sometimes a painted 2x4 can reinforce an important lesson.

Message from the Chief:

It has been a while since I have shared a message like this, but I wanted to take a minute to talk about something that has been on my mind.

Over the last few years, Whitewater Township Fire Department has changed quite a bit. We have grown our membership, expanded training opportunities, added equipment, and continued building a team of people that care about this community and care about doing the job right.

Recently, we established some internal guiding principles for our department. The purpose was simple: to clearly define what should drive our training, our decision making, and the way we approach the job.

At the center of that discussion was one simple idea: Citizens First.

When someone calls 911, they are calling because they need help. That responsibility should drive how we train, how we prepare, and how we respond.

For us, that means continuing to train with purpose, continuing to hold ourselves to a high standard, and continuing to prepare for the day somebody needs us.

I am proud of every member of this department. The progress we have made over the last several years has come from people willing to put in the work and commit themselves to serving something bigger than themselves.

Thank you for continuing to represent this department and this community.

Tonight Whitewater Fire hosted Elk Rapids Fire Department for a joint “back to basics” forcible entry and search drill.

Crews spent the evening working on fundamentals including search techniques, communication, and forcible entry skills. We also discussed lessons learned from Firefighter Rescue Survey data and how that information continues to shape the way firefighters operate.

Training with neighboring departments also helps build familiarity with the people we may be working alongside on the next incident.

Here’s a few pictures from the evening!
