FRAUD ALERT

We have been notified of several reports of a sophisticated email fraud scheme targeting residents.

In these cases, victims receive an email that appears to be from Microsoft. The email prompts them to call a listed phone number. When the victim calls, they reach an individual who speaks fluent, unaccented English (possibly AI-assisted).

The caller falsely claims that illegal or adult content has been detected on the victim’s computer and demands payment—often as much as $20,000—to “resolve” the issue. Payment is requested in the form of gift cards.

If the victim hesitates, the scammer offers to transfer the call to the victim’s bank. In reported cases, the call is transferred to someone posing as a representative from Capital One, who then reinforces the scam and assists the victim in maxing out multiple credit cards to purchase untraceable gift cards.

This is a scam. No legitimate company or financial institution will request payment in gift cards.

How to protect yourself:
- Do not open emails from unknown or suspicious senders.
- Do not click on links or call phone numbers provided in unsolicited emails.
- Never purchase gift cards as a form of payment for alleged debts or computer issues.
- If you need to contact your bank, use the phone number on your bank statement or official website—never a number provided in an email.
If you believe you have been targeted or victimized by this scam, please contact the Iowa County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant Chief Cody Westfall and Iowa State Trooper Seth Bean were invited to speak to the Adulting 101 class at the Williamsburg High School. As part of the class, the students were asked to research topics that teens transitioning into adulthood might face, and develop questions based on that research. We discussed issues such as domestic violence, alcohol/drug usage, vehicular accidents, scams/identy theft, and many other curve balls life tends to throw.
