The Williamsburg Fire Department is proud to announce the promotion of Battalion Chief Cary Middlebrook to Deputy Fire Chief!

Following a highly competitive selection process that included an exceptional group of candidates, Chief Middlebrook distinguished himself through his leadership, experience, and unwavering commitment to the department. His accomplishments throughout his career, combined with his dedication to continuous personal and professional growth, made him the clear choice to lead our Operations Division.

Chief Middlebrook’s journey with the Williamsburg Fire Department began as a volunteer while attending Bruton High School. In August 2005, he was hired as a full-time firefighter and has since advanced through every operational rank within the department. Along the way, he has served as a Senior Firefighter, Master Firefighter, Primary Field Training Officer, Captain, Battalion Chief, Fire Marshal, and member of several local and regional technical rescue teams, including Virginia Task Force 2.

Throughout his career, Chief Middlebrook has played a key role in numerous initiatives that have strengthened our department and improved service to our community. His contributions include advancing the use of technology to improve operational efficiency, helping develop the department’s Mobile Integrated Healthcare (MIH) program, and overseeing the implementation of the US Digital station alerting system in our new fire station.

Since January 2023, Chief Middlebrook has served as the Battalion Chief assigned to B-Shift, where he has continued to demonstrate the leadership, professionalism, and dedication that have defined his career.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Chief Middlebrook on this well-earned promotion. We look forward to his continued leadership and the positive impact he will have on the future of our department.

Congratulations, Deputy Chief Middlebrook!

Today, we would like to recognize and congratulate Douglas Bailey on a well-deserved retirement after 28 years of dedicated service to our department.

Doug began his career with us as a volunteer and shortly thereafter became a member of our paid staff, serving the department and community ever since. Throughout his career, Doug has been an outstanding mentor, always willing to share his knowledge and experience with others.

Anyone who has worked with Doug knows his passion for the apparatus side of the fire service. Whether it’s the newest truck in the fleet or a piece of equipment from years ago, Doug can tell you just about anything you want to know. His knowledge, dedication, and willingness to teach have made a lasting impact on countless members of this department.

Doug, we want you to know how much you are appreciated. Thank you for your years of service, your mentorship, and everything you have done for this department. While retirement marks the end of a career, it certainly doesn’t mark the end of your place here. Your seat at the table will always be waiting when you stop by to visit.

Please join us in congratulating Doug on a remarkable career and wishing him all the best in this next chapter of life.

Congratulations and thank you for 28 years of service!

**Garage Fire**

On Wednesday evening at 5:48 p.m, fire personnel were dispatched to the 100 block of Robert Cole Lane for a reported structure fire. Upon arrival, crews encountered an active fire in the garage area of the residence. Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire, limiting extension primarily to the room above the garage and smoke migration into the living areas of the home. Crews were able to isolate electrical power to the garage area, which helped minimize damage and prevented the family from being displaced from the residence.

Additional responders included units from the James City County Fire Department. We would like to thank them for their continued support.

A-Shift got after it today with another “Murph” workout, this time in the rain.

The workout typically consists of a 1-mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and finishes with another 1-mile run.

“Murph” was created in honor of U.S. Navy SEAL Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. The workout serves as a way to remember his sacrifice and honor those who gave everything in service to our country.

C-Shift took advantage of the cool, overcast Sunday weather by getting together with friends and family to complete the “Murph” workout. Days like these remind us how important fitness, teamwork, and camaraderie are both on and off the job. Before and after photos.

Strong work everyone!

More EMS Week recognition!

Today we are recognizing Travis Espiritu (right), John Sears (left), and Nik Bartelt (not pictured). Today these guys are holding down the second due apparatus.

These members are cross staffing Tower 10 and Medic 20, our second-due ambulance, meaning they respond on different apparatus depending on the needs of the call. Their flexibility and teamwork help ensure we can continue providing effective service to the community.

Travis has also been hard at work wrapping up his probationary task book and completing various scenarios to ensure he is ready to be released from probation. Soon, he’ll be making the transition from an orange helmet shield to a black one.

Strong work, fellas, and thank you for everything you do.

We also want to shoutout everyone who has stopped by to bring in treats, breakfast and snacks for EMS week so far. It is always appreciated!

Over the past three days, each shift completed our annual Work Performance Test, and everyone crushed it.

The test consists of multiple stations designed to simulate real fireground operations. The evolutions must be completed within the allotted time. Members complete the course in full turnout gear and air packs to make the scenarios as realistic as possible.

This year, we were fortunate to be able to set up and run our own course in-house at the station. In previous years, we utilized equipment from the James City County Fire Department, and we would like to thank them again for their support and partnership over the years.

Great work by all personnel involved.

EMS Week continued with recognizing the work that happens behind the scenes to keep our apparatus response ready.

Checking the trucks goes far beyond the fire engines and ambulances. Shout out to Parker Dolak and James Miller, two of our BLS providers, for helping keep everything in top shape.

James is currently enrolled in our paramedic program, while Parker is preparing to attend the next upcoming class. We are proud to see both of them continuing to further their education and careers in EMS.

In addition to our frontline apparatus, smaller specialty units such as ASAP 10 and Gator 10 are also routinely checked, maintained, and operated to ensure they are ready when needed. These units are commonly staffed for special events including football games, 5K races, concerts, and many other community events throughout the year.

Thank you to all of our personnel who put in the work every day to make sure our equipment and crews are prepared to serve the community.
