The Atlas offers insights into bird species breeding in the Commonwealth and related information.

The Atlas website is being released in two phases. The initial phase, online now, includes:

โ€ข Species Accounts for the 203 species found breeding in Virginia are the centerpiece of the website.

โ€ข Interpreting Species Accounts gives detailed explanations to aid in understanding the maps, figures, and other information presented for each species.

โ€ข Atlas Methods explains how the atlas data were collected.

โ€ข Results providing insights into species no longer breeding in Virginia since the first Atlas conducted in the late 1980s, as well as the exciting discoveries of species now breeding here that were not during the first Atlas period.

โ€ข Acknowledgments lists the individuals and organizations who contributed to the Atlas project, including field volunteers and staff who contributed to the massive Atlas dataset, photographers whose images enhance the website, generous financial donors who made the websiteโ€™s creation possible, and so many other contributions.

Stay tuned! In early 2026, the second phase of the Atlas release will provide the analytical methodology, additional results, summary statistics on survey effort and block coverage, information on Virginiaโ€™s geographical features and habitats, and the potential role of the Atlas in bird conservation.

We invite you to visit the Second Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas and let us know what you think using the Contact Us page.

Nancy Barnhart, president of the WBC, writes:

The forecast for tomorrow and Thursday includes a winter storm warning. With that in mind we are postponing our 2/19 meeting one week and rescheduling it for Wednesday February 26. We are excited to have Bill Williams as our speaker telling us about โ€œThe Birdlife of Virginiaโ€™s Colonial Historic Triangle: Then and Nowโ€. This will be a special presentation that we want to enjoy in person and we were able to get the Quarterpath Rec Center for next week. So please mark your calendars for next Wednesday, February 26, refreshments at 6:00, meeting starts at 6:30. We will send the zoom link in the next few days. Thanks all. Stay warm and safe.

Itโ€™s time to apply for Nature Camp https://www.naturecamp.net/ scholarships! The educational camp in the George Washington National Forest has, for many years, offered opportunities for nature-loving students to learn about our Virginia environment and strategies for protecting it. During October, the Williamsburg Bird Club is accepting applications for scholarships for Summer 2025 sessions.
The Bill Williams Nature Camp scholarships, valued at $1,000 each, offer environmental opportunities for students in James City County, upper York County, and Williamsburg. A committee evaluates the applications to choose recipients who exemplify the ideals of Williamsburg Bird Club.
Nature Camp, a two-week, co-educational, academic camp in Vesuvius, Virginia, emphasizes education in natural history and environmental studies. It is intended for those seeking a science/nature experience. Campers will attend class daily, maintain a notebook, complete written projects, and participate in outdoor activities.
If you know of a student in grades 5-12, who loves nature and would enjoy a two-week session at Nature Camp, please encourage them to download an application from the Williamsburg Bird Club website and return it by October 31. See http://williamsburgbirdclub.org

Thirty-eight birders joined me at New Quarter Park for the 18 th โ€œalmost annualโ€ get together to celebrate the new year! Great to see so many familiar faces and many new friends too! Several people took off for bird walks around the park while others chatted and shared with new friends in the fire circle area. New
Yearโ€™s Day is my favorite holiday, and I am pleased that so many birders came out to celebrate with me. Happy New Year to everyone!
