"Children know that if they have a question about the world, the library is the place to find the answer. And someone will always be there to help them find the answer-our librarians. (A librarian's) job is an important one. Our nation runs on the fuel of information and imagination that libraries provide. And they are in charge of collecting and sharing this information in a helpful way. Librarians inform the public, and by doing so, they strengthen our great democracy." — Laura Bush
Libraries Are Under Threat
In many places, libraries are facing budget cuts, closures, or even attacks on the kinds of books they carry. A free society reads freely. Libraries are the first line of defense of our First Amendment rights, libraries are the Litmus test for freedom. Libraries welcome all and expect no one to have to spend any money they solely exist to help the community.
They’re More Than Books
Modern libraries offer free Wi-Fi, job hunting help, homework support, digital access, and safe spaces. They have computers, printers, fax machines, scanners, laminating machines, digital content, study areas, social outlets, reference and research tools, local history, and genealogy. Libraries are always here to help the community. In many communities’ libraries are the center. Like all universities and colleges, they are schools with a library in the center where all the knowledge is kept. And of course, libraries are much more than handing out books, they offer life enrichment classes, and creative and educational programs for all ages. They circulate not only books, audiobooks, large print books, movies, music and games, and puzzles.
Support Intellectual Freedom
With ongoing debates about book bans and censorship, standing up for libraries means standing up for access to information, diverse voices, and the right to read freely. "Freedom is found through the portals of our nation's libraries." — David McCullough. Never in the history of mankind has the book burner been on the right side.
They Build Strong Communities
Libraries host events, language classes, voter registration, continued education and so much more. Libraries foster goodwill and are responsible for not only educating children but the entire community, fostering lifelong learning. Summer Reading Programs keep young minds as active as their bodies so they are prepared to learn when school starts back in session. For seniors’ libraries provide a welcoming atmosphere that fights loneliness and helps keep their minds sharp and active. Libraries are gathering places to enrich lives broaden conscious awareness and welcome free exchange of ideas. Most people in our area feel that our library is the jewel case of our community. A beacon for all to see that our library helps build strong and happier communities.
How Can I Help?
We encourage our friends, family, and patrons to write, and call their federal and state legislators. Share on social media just how important libraries are to our community. Remember, personalized messages or calls are more effective than form letters. Be sure to describe how the loss of the services would impact your library and your local community.
