⚠️ This item has been REMOVED from the agenda

THREE MINUTES FOR RESIDENTS. UNLIMITED TIME FOR GOVERNMENT.

‼️Proposed ordinance to limit your public comment ‼️

WHY NOW?

Monroe Township residents deserve answers.

For years, Township Council meetings operated without a formal ordinance requiring sign-in sheets, limiting public participation, restricting responses from officials, and granting expanded authority over how residents may address their elected government.

Then something changed.

Residents began showing up.

Residents began asking difficult questions.

Residents began challenging redevelopment projects.

Residents began speaking out against warehouses, overdevelopment, and now proposed data centers.

Residents became informed.

Residents became organized.

Residents became vocal.

Council communicated with concerned residents one on one.

⚠️ Now comes Ordinance O:29-2026. ⚠️

📄 Read the proposed ordinance yourself:
https://monroetownshipnj.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/06/O-29-2026-DRAFT.pdf

Under this proposal:

🔹 Residents must sign in before speaking.

🔹 Residents must be recognized before speaking.

🔹 Residents must direct comments through only the Council President.

🔹 Township officials (council) elected to represent residents, and mayor appointed professionals paid by taxpayer dollars, will only respond to residents if authorized to speak.

🔹 Residents are limited to just THREE MINUTES.

🔹 Follow-up comments are restricted.

🔹 Time cannot be transferred to engineers, attorneys, environmental experts, or other representatives.

🔹 A speaker may be ruled “out of order” and stopped before completing their comments.

Let’s be honest.

Three minutes may be enough to discuss a pothole.

Three minutes is NOT enough to discuss:

• Data Centers
• Redevelopment Plans
• Environmental Impacts
• Power Consumption
• Diesel Generator Concerns
• Traffic Studies
• Stormwater Management
• Taxpayer Exposure
• Planning & Zoning Issues
• Legal Matters Affecting Monroe Residents
• Bill lists, spending, budgets…

Residents spend hours researching these issues.

Residents read engineering reports.

Residents review legal filings.

Residents attend meeting after meeting.

Residents file OPRA requests.

Residents study redevelopment plans.

And now Residents are expected to condense all of that into THREE MINUTES!

Residents have every right to ask:

❓ Why is this ordinance needed now?
❓ What problem is it solving?
❓ Why wasn’t it proposed years ago?
❓ Why does it appear after unprecedented public opposition to redevelopment projects and proposed data centers?
❓ Is municipal government becoming more accessible, or more controlled?

📢 MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD

🗓 Wednesday, June 24, 2026
📍 Monroe Township Municipal Building - 125 Virginia Avenue
Williamstown, NJ 08094

🕡 Ordinance Committee
Meeting 6:30 PM

The Regular Township Council Meeting follows immediately afterward.

This ordinance starts in committee before moving forward to Council consideration.

If you believe residents deserve meaningful opportunities to address their elected officials, attend.

If you want your voice to remain as it currently is, attend.

If you care about transparency, accountability, redevelopment, data centers, open government, and public participation, attend.

If you want the council board that you elected to address you personally and directly, attend.

If you want to stop autocratic rule of the council president, attend.

If you believe municipal government should listen to the taxpayers, NOT manage the taxpayers, attend.

Bring your questions.

Bring your concerns.

Bring your voice.

Because public meetings belong to the public.

And once public participation is limited, it is rarely expanded without the public demanding it.
