On Thursday Aug. 27, one night only, the celebrated chamber/prog/experimental trio Order of the Illusive performs a score to the oldest surviving animated film, Lotte Reiniger's THE ADVENTURES OF PRINCE ACHMED (1926) at Images Cinema.

The film uses a unique silhouette animation technique with cutouts and an early multiplane camera. Based on One Thousand and One Nights, it follows Prince Achmed's adventures on a flying horse, battling a sorcerer and meeting Aladdin, all told through intricate, expressive black silhouettes against colorful, tinted backgrounds. The film is a landmark in animation history, showcasing innovative techniques and a dreamlike visual style.

Formed in 2012, Order of the Illusive creates live, improvised experimental scores for silent film. Their unconventional instrumentation and eclectic musical influences let them roam across a rich range of sonic and musical territory, crafting immersive sound and visual experiences that draw audiences into worlds where music and image become one.
