Over the last few weeks, our crew has been training hard at the acquired structures. We have focused on hose advancements, Rapid Intervention Teams (RIT), and last night, we started one of three classes in victim search and rescue.

Throughout the last few weeks, we have been fortunate to host members from other area departments, as well as get our newly started juniors working into our department to help them gain knowledge and skills. We have also been fortunate to have members attend the other departments' trainings at these structures to help build our partnerships and workmanship countywide.

These trainings are important to our team to help them build the necessary skills needed if they were to need to remove a victim or a downed firefighter. Throughout these trainings, we have focused on different styles of removal of civilians and fire personnel, personal escapes while maintaining SCBA control, and different search techniques, all while trying to build each member's ability to do quick-paced searches to simulate maximizing a patient's outcome.

We train every Thursday starting at 6 p.m. If you are interested in joining the department, stop by and pick up an application. We welcome all members of other departments to join us on Thursdays to help hone their skills.

Over the last few weeks we have been training hard on finishing our apparatus operator certifications and now moving into numerous trainings on an acquired structure that we are able to train with.

Last week, members focused on Scene Size ups - 360 - CAN reports. Each member was given a scenario and tasked with reporting back to dispatch numerous important factors when arriving on scene to insure proper information is being relayed for the next arriving crews.

On Thursday we expanded our training with Thermal Imagining Cameras (TICs) and their functions. Following up from last week’s training each member utilized their TICs to complete 360 reports and locate potential hot spots utilizing our doll house prop. After this initial training, each member was able to go into the smoke filled structure while wearing full PPE to simulate real life scenarios and utilize the TICs to locate potential victims, understand thermal layering and work on mastery with these tools while wearing PPE.

Would you like to join our department? Stop by and fill out an application and get started training immediately, we train every Thursday starting at 6 pm. We also welcome members from neighboring departments to come out and train beside us.

We want to share with our residents that starting this week, our on-shift crews will be flow testing and cleaning up all of the fire hydrants in our jurisdiction. We will start with the hydrants within the city limits and move from there.

After each hydrant is flow tested and recorded, a second crew will be coming through to paint and perform maintenance on each of the hydrants. This includes using food-grade grease to help the caps be accessible and not seize to the body itself. The crews will also be painting each hydrant barrel yellow and painting the caps and top to specific colors based on their flow numbers and NFPA standard. During this time, our members will be clearing a pathway to and around every hydrant (this includes removing plants, flowers, or decorations that may be in the way).

What is flow testing?

Flow testing is done to identify any issues, water flow capability, and to flush out each hydrant within our jurisdiction. We do this to ensure that in case of emergencies, we have an accessible water supply within the area. Each hydrant will be tested, recorded, and logged within our department and the water department.

How do we use this information?

During the process of flow testing, the firefighter will apply a few appliances to the hydrant. One of these is our flow meter; as water is forced from the hydrant through the flow tube, it gives a reading of gallons per minute (GPM). This tells us how much water is being pushed out naturally through a system. For hydrants at the bottom of hills or closer to the main lines, they will have higher numbers. We use these numbers to quickly identify the most efficient hydrants in the area. These numbers are also used within our fire department's response applications and show where every hydrant and flow rate is to help identify water sources in route to the emergency.

With the weather warming up and everyone cleaning up their properties, remember that from February 15 to April 30 each year, the state implements a burn ban between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. During this time, it is illegal to burn within 150 feet of any woodlines or brushlines.

If you are doing any controlled burns during the allowed burning hours, be sure to contact the KSP non-emergency number at (859)-428-1212 to prevent any unnecessary responses from any of the fire departments.

For all emergencies, dial 911.

🚨 Grant County – We Need Your Help 🚨

Grant County Emergency Management is seeking local churches, businesses, and community facilities willing to open their doors during severe weather emergencies.

When winter storms, tornadoes, or major weather events impact our county, some residents may need a safe place to go until conditions improve. Having trusted locations already identified helps us respond faster and better protect our community.

We are currently seeking facilities that may be willing to serve as temporary emergency shelter locations during:

❄️ Snow Storms
🌪️ Tornadoes
⚠️ Severe Weather Emergencies

This does not mean your building would always be used, but having partnerships in place allows us to quickly assist residents if the need arises.

If your church, business, or organization may be willing to help, please reach out.

Today we were fortunate enough to take in our newest apparatus Engine 53. While the engine still has some mandatory checks before we take full ownership, this was our first opportunity to bring the truck back to the city.

Engine 53 will be replacing E51 which will move to reserve status once its in service. E53 will take a few more weeks to setup before it can go into service. This will include putting all of our tools, hoses and also certifying each member in pumping and driving.

We want to thank the citizens of Williamstown, City Council, Fire Chiefs and Mayor
