It is with great sadness that we share the passing Willda "Butch" Bresett. Butch spent many years serving our community with both the fire department and ambulance before his retirement. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends!

Rest easy & thank you for your service! đźš’đźš‘

With great sadness, the Barre City Fire Department announces the passing of retired Captain Willda “Butchy” Bresett.

Captain Bresett was hired by the Barre City Fire Department in 1987 and faithfully served the citizens of Barre City until his retirement in 2012. His commitment to helping others, however, extended far beyond his career with Barre City. Through his dedicated service with the Williamstown Fire Department and Williamstown Ambulance Service, Butch devoted countless years to protecting and caring for his community.

Butch was the kind of firefighter and mentor who could always be counted on. Whether responding to emergencies, repairing equipment, sharing his knowledge with the next generation of responders, or lending a helping hand wherever it was needed, his impact was felt by everyone around him. He possessed a remarkable wealth of knowledge and experience, but perhaps what many will remember most was his quick wit, legendary one-liners, and ability to bring laughter to even the most challenging situations.

Although Butch retired from the Barre City Fire Department in 2012, the impact of his service continued to be felt throughout our community and the fire and EMS profession. His legacy is one of selfless service, mentorship, dedication, and a deep commitment to helping others. The contributions he made to Barre City, Williamstown, and the countless responders he influenced throughout his career will not be forgotten.

We extend our deepest condolences to Butch’s family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Rest easy, Captain Bresett. Thank you for your service.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR WILLIAMSTOWN RESIDENTS.....

The Williamstown Fire Department has been involved in many neighborly dispute calls over the last several years. Just remember when you call the Fire Department because your neighbors are having a campfire that you dont agree with takes emergency personnel away from true emergencies not to mention their families, jobs, and other important things in the firefighters personal lives. We are 1000% ready to help and serve when you need help. Thats what we are here for and enjoy doing. To make a point with your neighbors is unnecessary especially at 1am. It costs the town a chunk of change everytime we go out to neighbors disputing over campfires and burn piles.

How to tell the difference in a trash burn vs a good old fashion campfire is smell and smoke. If the smoke is black and dark Grey and smells nasty its probably a consistent trash burn and should be extinguished. If the smoke is light, white, bluish with a natural wood burning smell its probably just a natural wood burn taking place.

NOTE:
1. A lot of people may use newspapers, cardboard, an excelerant to get a natural fire going and may put off high flames for the first few minutes. Typically responsible people will let the fire die down to a reasonable size.

2. Always contact the fire warden for any fire not inside a fire pit/ring

3. Only natural materials can be burned. Chip board and some furniture types are not allowed.

4. Investigate the fire a little more before calling 911. Perhaps without putting yourself in harms way have a civil conversation with your neighbors to resolve your burning differences.

Lastly, if we continue to see a rise in false trash burn complaints we will be working with law enforcement to set fines to the responsible parties including the caller making false claims. The taxpayers shouldn't have to pay for neighbors not getting along.

At approximately 2:13pm the WFD responded to a brush fire spreading rapidly in the woods. The fire was a result of an unattended and unpermited brush pile burn. Approximately 3 acres had burned before containment. Thank you to the Brookfield, Barre Town Fire Department, Barre City, Northfield, Berlin, and Washington Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in extinguishing the fire.

Burn permits are required and no outside burning is permitted in a burn ban. When you think it wont happen to you your risking the chance it can happen. Wait for more wet conditions and always check with the Fire Warden for a permit.

Today the Williamstown Fire Department will be out of service for a few hours as we say good bye to our brother, colleague, and friend Safety Officer Mike Greenia.

Rest assured that Williamstown is covered for any emergency calls needed from our mutual aid friends of Barre Town Fire Department. They will be manning an engine in Williamstown while we are in Jericho today. Northfield FD will be on standby with there ladder truck and tanker to respond if needed. I thank these departments and all our mutual aid departments for your willingness to always help out in Williamstown and allow us to help you when needed. Mutual aid is a great thing.

Rest in Peace Williamstown Fire Department Safety Officer Michael Greenia.
