Obama misunderstands this moment. The Progressive Era, New Deal and Great Society laws were enacted when America was still a young and growing nation. They were enacted in a nation that was vibrant, raw, underinstitutionalized and needed taming.

We are no longer that nation. We are now a mature nation with an aging population. Far from being underinstitutionalized, we are bogged down with a bloated political system, a tangled tax code, a byzantine legal code and a crushing debt.

The task of reinvigorating a mature nation is fundamentally different than the task of civilizing a young and boisterous one. It does require some collective action: investing in human capital. But, in other areas, it also involves stripping away — streamlining the special interest sinecures that have built up over the years and liberating private daring.

President Obama’s second Inaugural Address makes a compelling case for a pragmatic and patriotic progressivism.

"Conservatives, frankly, have become purveyors of outrage instead of preachers for a cause. Instead of showing how increasing government harms people, how free markets help people, and how conservative policies benefit all Americans, we scream 'Benghazi' and 'Fast & Furious.'

We’re off key and off message."

Congratulations Mr. President on your second inaugural. Saying that makes some of you really enraged. I said the same on twitter shortly after his official

Living off of others is the exact opposite of what attracted most of our ancestors to America. Their goal was to make it on their own hard work and merits. Few would have objected to a safety net for the most disadvantaged citizens, but our current system, with its massive transfers, would have been noxious to most voters just a few decades ago.

Same-sex marriage is an issue on which intelligent and well-meaning Americans, Democrats, Republicans, moderates, conservatives, and Ephs can and do disagree.

We're all familiar with the eloquent and forceful arguments for legalizing same-sex marriage. But this WSJ op-ed from Princeton's Robbie George presents the opposite view, and thus merits a read.

"We can't move one inch toward an answer simply by appealing to equality. Every marriage policy draws lines, leaving out some types of relationships. Equality forbids arbitrary line-drawing. But we cannot know which lines are arbitrary without answering two questions: What is marriage, and why does it matter for policy?"

In The Wall Street Journal, Sherif Girgis, Ryan Anderson and Robert George write that there is a reason why the conjugal unions of traditional marriage have been distinguished from all others since antiquity.

"Democracy and socialism have but one thing in common — 'equality.' But note well the difference. Democracy aims at equality in liberty. Socialism desires equality in constraint and in servitude."

"The essence of America - that which really unites us - is not ethnicity, or nationality or religion. It is an idea, and what an idea it is: That you can come from humble circumstances and do great things."
