This past week 4 Main-Transit firefighters took a pump operations class led by State Fire Instructor and past Main-Transit fire chief, Carl Fischer. Students learned the basic mechanics of pump operations, when to use tank versus hydrant water, how to use a deck gun and more! 9 engines and 1 ladder from various departments donated their time to help the class practice. These firefighters now have one more skillset to help their department. 🚒💦

Yesterday, Main-Transit firefighters conducted interior and exterior structural fire operations at their training building. Under the direction of Captain Jack Leising, the training focused on Vent, Enter, Isolate, and Search (V.E.I.S.) operations. This vital tactic allows firefighters to bypass blocked interior pathways and enter a burning structure directly through a window to rescue trapped occupants. Firefighters rotated through 3 distinct skill-building stations:
1. Rapid ladder deployment and positioning
2. Tactical window entry and primary victim search
3. Forcible entry and hose line advancement maneuvers
This hands-on training allowed firefighters to hone their technical skills and evaluate various strategic approaches to victim safety. 🚒💪🏻

Tonight MTFD firefighters and junior firefighters were invited to train with our partners at Newstead Fire Company. Main-Transit serves as the secondary FAST team for part of Newstead's district, and training at this acquired structure gave us a great opportunity to learn from each other in a realistic environment. We are looking forward to future training opportunities!

🚨 National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week 🚨

This week, we proudly recognize and thank our partners at the Amherst Police Department, Town of Amherst Central Fire Alarm Office, And Erie county dispatch services.

Main-Transit Fire Department is fortunate to have several current members serving within these dispatch centers. Dispatching is often a thankless job—frequently facing criticism from the public and even fellow responders—but the reality is far different.

Dispatchers are the first voice you hear in your time of need. They are the calm in chaos, the link between the emergency and the response, and the lifeline for both callers and first responders.

We would like to recognize our members who are part of the dispatching community. Your dedication, professionalism, and commitment do not go unnoticed. You are an essential part of MTFD, and we are proud to have you serving not only behind the scenes but also as officers within our department.

💪 Interested in making a difference?
Joining a volunteer fire department like Main-Transit can be a powerful stepping stone to many rewarding and essential career opportunities.

👮‍♂️🧑‍🚒Congratulations to Fire Captain Joe Karl on receiving the Amherst Police William Muck III Lifesaving Award!⛑️

In a critical, life-or-death situation, Joe—an Amherst Police Officer with a nursing degree and EMT certification used his training and quick thinking to provide lifesaving care to a severely wounded individual.

Because of the rapid response and teamwork of Officer Jon Howaniec (Past Captain of East Amherst Fire) and Officer Matthew Wall, a life was saved.

This is what true dedication, courage, and service look like.

👏 Congratulations to all involved—your actions made the difference between life and death.
