Honors English students at Williamsville High School had a unique opportunity on May 1st when bestselling author Robert Dugoni virtually joined Honors 303 classes to discuss his novel, The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell. The Zoom session allowed Mrs. Sinclair's junior classes to engage directly with the acclaimed author whose work has resonated deeply with readers across the country.
Throughout the conversation, Dugoni spoke candidly about the inspiration behind the novel, the writing process, and the themes woven throughout Sam Hill’s journey. Students explored topics such as identity, prejudice, resilience, friendship, faith, and the importance of compassion…many of the same themes they had been analyzing in class discussions and assignments. Dugoni explained how personal experiences and observations helped shape the emotional depth of the story and its unforgettable characters.
Students were especially interested in the character of Sam Hill and the significance of his “devil eyes,” which become a symbol of both judgment and strength throughout the novel. Dugoni encouraged students to think critically about how society often treats people who appear different and challenged them to consider how literature can build empathy and understanding.
During the Zoom session, student questions were answered ranging from character development and symbolism to Dugoni’s writing habits and advice for aspiring authors. He shared insights about perseverance, reminding students that writing and life often requires persistence, reflection, and courage.
The visit brought literature to life in a meaningful way for Honors juniors. Hearing directly from the author added a new layer of understanding to the novel and created an experience students are unlikely to forget. The discussion not only deepened students’ appreciation for The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell, but also reinforced the power of stories to connect people through shared experiences and emotions.
The Honors English department is grateful to Robert Dugoni for taking the time to speak with students and inspire the next generation of readers, writers, and thinkers.
