Senator Jeff Gordon’s proposed tax savings…
IT’S YOUR HARD-EARNED MONEY.
YOU SHOULD KEEP MORE OF IT!
I’m proud to have shown up, worked collaboratively with others, and stayed focused on people, not partisan politics. Together, we got significant state income tax relief done, and I’m proud of that progress. An estimated 1.3 million people benefited.
Starting with the 2024 tax year, the lowest tax bracket was cut from 3% to 2%, and the next tax bracket was cut from 5% to 4.5%.
The 2% rate applies to taxable income up to $10,000 for single filers and $20,000 for joint filers. The 4.5% rate applies to income from $10,001 to $50,000 for single filers and $20,001 to $100,000 for joint filers. The tax cut was structured so that the benefits from the reduced rates phase out at $150,000 for single filers and $300,000 for joint filers.
But there’s more work to do, especially for the middle class, individuals and families squeezed by the high cost of living who earn too much to qualify for state assistance but still struggle to get ahead. I’m committed to fighting for working families and delivering results.
I am already working to deliver additional tax relief. My Affordability Proposal includes the following measures to help working families, including more people in the middle class:
Cut the lowest tax bracket to 0%.
Cut the next tax bracket to 3%.
Cut the third tax bracket to 4%.
The proposed 0% rate would apply to taxable income up to $10,000 for single filers and $20,000 for joint filers. The 3% rate would apply to income from $10,001 to $50,000 for single filers and $20,001 to $100,000 for joint filers. The 4% rate would apply to income from $50,001 to $100,000 for single filers and $100,001 to $200,000 for joint filers.
Just like the tax cuts that took effect in 2024, my proposed additional tax cuts would phase out at $150,000 for single filers and $300,000 for joint filers.
These proposed tax cuts could provide annual savings ranging from $800 to $1,400, depending on filing status and before deductions and applicable tax credits.
Connecticut has had years of substantial budget surpluses and a healthy rainy day fund. You are being overtaxed. That is why I worked to deliver the significant income tax cuts already achieved and why I will continue fighting for additional tax relief as your State Senator.
