Williston Rural Fire Department would like to thank everyone involved in battling last nights fire. We had great support from the following:
Williston Fire Department
Epping Rural Fire Protection District-Epping
Trenton Fire Department
Alamo Fire Department
Tioga Volunteer Fire and Ambulance
Ray Fire
North Dakota Highway Patrol
Williams County Sheriff's Office, ND
Williston Police Department
Williams County/Williston Emergency Management
Mountrail-Williams Electric Cooperative
(I hope I didn’t forget anyone)

And of course we have to recognize our great team at Williams County Dispatch Center for their work in coordination and mutual aid paging.

All of the teamwork made operations go smoothly and helped with containing the fire as much as possible. Large events like this show the importance of working together with multiple organizations when helping hands are needed!

We still have crews on scene working to keep the fire contained. We ask for the public to continue to avoid the area while the crews are working on overhaul and mop up efforts.

The National Weather Service has issued a Fire Weather Watch for far-western and southern ND, effective for much of tomorrow. A combination of gusty winds and dry air will make burning very risky in the highlighted counties.

Our partners at North Dakota Game and Fish Department have flagged that wildfire potential remains high across the state today, April 8.

While we focus on protecting our environment, wildfires present a major challenge to air quality across the state. Smoke carries pollutants that impact the health of our communities.

Before you burn, check the index.

WRFD would like to express our gratitude to the Olson family for inviting us to do a live burn training on their old farmhouse. The training included vertical ventilation, live fire evolutions with hose advancement, and drone training. Also, a thank you to our volunteers who showed up and made this training happen!

The power of closed doors was recently demonstrated at a structure fire to which we responded.

Upon arrival, there was no visible smoke or flames from the exterior. However, upon entering the residence, we encountered a door that was extremely hot to the touch, accompanied by a light haze inside the house.

We strategically entered through the overhead garage door to prevent the spread of smoke and fire into the living areas. After partially opening the overhead door and introducing oxygen, flames began to glow. Although the garage was charged with smoke and heat, the lack of oxygen prevented further intensification.

The damage was contained to a burnt 4-wheeler and smoke damage within the garage.

It is evident that the closed doors, including the overhead garage door, played a crucial role in saving this structure.
