🇺🇸 Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today we remember and honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country.

As the day comes to an end, we reflect on the sacrifice that gave us the freedoms we enjoy every day, and pause to reflect on the courage, selflessness, and dedication they carried in service to others.

Today, members of the Williston Fire Department recognized this sacrifice by participating in the "Murph" Challenge with our friends at CrossFit Vokse.

The Murph Challenge is done in honor of Navy Seal Lieutenant Michael P. Murphy, who was killed in action on June 28th, 2005. After engaging in a fierce firefight with the Taliban, Lt. Murphy selflessly left his position of cover to obtain a clear radio signal to communicate his unit's location and request immediate support. Lt. Murphy was struck by gunfire more than 14 times but was able to successfully transmit the message and continued to fight until he died from his wounds.

Lt. Murphy created the CrossFit-style workout, which consists of a one-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and a one-mile run.

Although this tradition honors the memory of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, WFD participates in this event every Memorial Day to honor the memories of all service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our freedoms.

Truck 2, from Fire Station #2, arrived at 9:48 PM and immediately began roof operations and ventilation. The fire was under control by approximately 10:15 PM and was completely extinguished at approximately 11:08 PM. Have you seen a new Fire Engine driving around town?

Earlier this month, the WFD put the new Engine 7 into service with a ceremonial push-in. The push-in ceremony dates back to the days when fire engines were horse-drawn. When firefighters returned to the station, the horse-drawn carts were pushed into the fire station. Today, we honor that tradition by giving the new fire engine its first wash and pushing it into the station upon its placement in service.

This engine was ordered in 2022 and is part of the department's long-term strategic apparatus plan. You may notice that this fire engine looks considerably different than previous engines. This truck was designed by our crews for optimal efficiency. Some of its features include:

📍Smaller design, both height and length for easy maneuverability
📍Deeper and more accessible hose beds for rapid deployment
📍Secure storage inside and outside of the truck for quick tool and ladder deployment
📍Interior layout that matches crew assignments and optimizes storage space
📍750 gallons of onboard water with a 2,000-gallon-per-minute pump

Engine 7 will be housed out of Fire Station #1. Stop by and check it out, or if you see our crews out and about, feel free to come take a look!
