🌺🌴 Teacher Appreciation Week at Garden Valley Elementary 🌴🌺

May 4-8 was Teacher Appreciation Week and we had a wonderful time celebrating our amazing teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week! This year's Hawaiian Luau theme brought fun, appreciation, and a little tropical sunshine to Garden Valley throughout the week.

A special thank you to our families and PTO for helping make the week so memorable:

🍳 Monday – The Wagner family provided a delicious breakfast for staff.

🍦 Tuesday – Teachers and staff enjoyed a special treat from Susie Q's Ice Cream Truck, sponsored by the PTO. The PTO also treated all Garden Valley students to ice cream as a fun surprise!

🥪 Wednesday – The Folvag/ Miller family provided a wonderful lunch, lemonade and sweet treats for our annual staff Wish You Well luncheon.

🍧 Thursday – The Barkman family sponsored a refreshing visit from Jer Bears for shaved ice for all staff.

🎁 Friday – The PTO wrapped up the week with a treat bag for all teachers.

Throughout the week, our teachers were celebrated with Hawaiian Luau-themed activities, treats, and surprises as a small token of appreciation for everything they do for our students and school community.

Thank you to our outstanding Garden Valley teachers and staff for the dedication, care, and commitment you bring each day. Your passion for helping students learn and grow makes a lasting impact, and we are grateful for all you do.

🌱🔬🎨 STEM & the Arts in Full Bloom at Garden Valley Elementary! 🎨🔬🌱

This spring, Garden Valley Elementary students had exciting opportunities to explore, create, and innovate through hands-on STEM and arts experiences across every grade level!

Students participated in engaging lessons from Gateway to Science, where they investigated topics such as forensics, coding, watersheds, earthworm dissections, states of matter, plant life cycles, plant parts, and many other exciting science concepts. These interactive experiences encouraged curiosity, critical thinking, problem-solving, and discovery. This year the students were able to take part in three days where the Gateway to Science Center was at Garden Valley for science and STEM lessons. These days were funded through Title 1 funds as it was part of our innovation pillar.

In addition, our amazing PTO sponsored art enrichment lessons for every class through the James Memorial Art Center. Students enjoyed listening to stories and then creating unique art projects connected to each lesson, allowing them to express their creativity while making meaningful connections to literature and the world around them.

These experiences help foster innovation, creativity, collaboration, and a love of learning while bringing STEM and the arts to life for our Grizzlies. We are grateful to Gateway to Science, the James Memorial Art Center, and our PTO for helping provide these memorable learning opportunities for our students!

💚🐻 Together, we're helping our Grizzlies grow, create, and explore!

✈️🌎 Garden Valley Elementary Takes Flight Again! 🌎✈️

On Friday, May 8, our third Travel Day of the school year took students on another exciting adventure around the world!

Garden Valley Elementary was transformed into an airport and airplane experience complete with boarding passes, TSA security checkpoints, passports, in-flight activities, and delicious snacks and drinks provided by our amazing PTO.

This Travel Day, students traveled to four different countries: 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇧🇸 Bahamas, 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic, and 🇨🇦 Canada. As they journeyed from country to country, students had their passports stamped while learning about each nation's culture, traditions, geography, and daily life.

One of the highlights was tasting authentic foods from each destination:
🍪 Denmark – Danish cookies
🥮 Bahamas – Johnny cakes
🍌 Dominican Republic – Fried plantains
🥔 Canada – Ketchup chips

A special thank you to our wonderful tour guides who helped bring these countries to life:
🇩🇰 Denmark – Katrina Simonson
🇧🇸 Bahamas & 🇩🇴 Dominican Republic – WMSCC Classroom to Community Class
🇨🇦 Canada – Mr. Heise and Ms. Jami

Travel Days are a favorite Garden Valley Elementary tradition, providing students with hands-on learning experiences that allow them to explore the world, discover new cultures, and expand their understanding of the global community—all without leaving school.

Thank you to our PTO, tour guides, staff, and volunteers for helping make this incredible journey possible. Our Grizzlies continue to prove that learning can take us anywhere!✈️🌎💚🐻

Garden Valley Elementary students enjoyed an exciting day of fun, teamwork, and school spirit during our annual Field Day at the ARC on Thursday, May 14!

A huge thank you to Mr. Heise for organizing this fantastic event and to Enbridge for sponsoring lunch for all of our students. Thanks to the PTO for providing colored buffs for each grade to be easily identified though the day. Big thanks to the ASC for providing discounted admission on our field day.

Throughout the day, students participated in a variety of stations including running races, relays, tag games, tug-of-war, pickle ball, parachute activities, basketball, jump rope, hula hoops, jumping events, musical games, and more. It was a day filled with laughter, movement, teamwork, and Grizzly pride!🐻💚🏀

The fun continued when we returned to school for a Grizzly Gathering to celebrate the success of our Fun Run held on May 1. Mrs. Heser challenged students to raise $5,000, promising that if they met the goal, they could turn her into an ice cream sundae. Our Grizzlies didn't just meet the goal—they crushed it! Together, students raised an incredible $8,727 through donations, ticket sales, and community support.

As a reward, the top earners from each class had the opportunity to help turn both Mrs. Heser and Mr. Heise into ice cream sundaes during the Grizzly Gathering. Congratulations to our class winners:

🐻 Carvey-Kamptlyn Hixon
🐻 Ivy-TaysonHurd
🐻 Johnson-Aubrey Alvarez
🐻 Leda-Jaxon Smith
🐻 Smith-Archer Mattila
🐻 Rector-Kamden Sandberg
🐻 Renalyn-Tucker Stomley
🐻 Manzanas-Eden Meyer
🐻 Haugen-Ryder Janshen
🐻 Clouse-Tucker Adams
🐻 Whitlow-Remi Mattila

Special recognition goes to our top overall earners:
🥇 Kamden Sandberg – $1,100

To top off an amazing day, the Staker and Hixon treated all students and staff to delicious root beer and orange floats. It was the perfect way to celebrate a successful school year, an outstanding Fun Run, and a day full of fun with our school family.🥤

Thank you to our students, families, staff, PTO, sponsors, and community members for supporting this year's Fun Run and helping make both Field Day and our fundraising efforts such a tremendous success.

Until the next field day! 💚🐻

Garden Valley Elementary Service Learning Projects💚🤝

At Garden Valley Elementary, every grade level participates in a service-learning project each year. Each class selects and carries out its own project, combining grade-level content standards, 21st-century learning skills, and meaningful service to others. Through these projects, students learn that they have the power to make a positive difference in their school and community.

This year’s projects benefited the Mondak Humane Society, improved playground equipment, added birdhouses around Garden Valley, provided gratitude bags for community helpers, and refurbished the Garden Valley clothing closet.

👖To help classes get started, Garden Valley staff provided “seed money” through a Just Jeans January fundraiser. Staff members donated $20 for the opportunity to wear jeans during the month of January, creating startup funds for each class’s project.👖

Kindergarten – Supporting the Mondak Humane Society🐶🐱

In Mrs. Haugen’s kindergarten class, students held a Hat Day fundraiser and counted all of the donations as a class. After receiving a few additional donations at the end of the day, they raised a total of $147.31.

Students brainstormed items that could help dogs and cats awaiting adoption. Their ideas included pet food, treats, bones, pet beds, and cleaning supplies. Using the funds they raised, students purchased items from the Mondak Humane Society wish list.

First Grade – Playground Improvements🛝🥅

First graders held a Hat Day and organized a “Pennies for Playground” campaign. Last year’s project raised $1,200, which allowed the school to purchase two sturdy soccer nets for students to enjoy during recess and physical education. Funds raised this year will be used to purchase additional playground equipment to benefit current and future Garden Valley students.

Second Grade – Birdhouses for Garden Valley🐤🐦🪺

In Mrs. Carvey’s second-grade classroom, students learned about birds, including North Dakota’s state bird, the Western Meadowlark. They researched a bird of their choice and wrote informational paragraphs about their findings.

Students then worked collaboratively to assemble and paint birdhouses that will be placed around Garden Valley, creating habitats for local birds while beautifying the school grounds.

Fourth Grade – Gratitude for Community Helpers💚🤝👮🏽🧑🏻‍🚒👩🏻‍⚕️

On May 13, fourth-grade students visited the fire department, police department, Trinity, and the nursing home to deliver gratitude bags to community helpers. During their visits, students had the opportunity to take tours of several locations and learn more about the important roles these individuals play in our community.

Students also spread kindness by hiding painted kindness rocks throughout the local park.

Fifth Grade – Supporting the Garden Valley Clothing Closet👚👖👕

On May 20, fifth-grade students wrapped up their service-learning project during their end-of-year celebration trip. After bowling and enjoying pizza in the park, students visited Walmart to purchase clothing and supplies for the Garden Valley clothing closet, which provides essential items to students who may need them during the school day.

Through a lemonade 🍋stand at the Happiest School on Earth Fun Run and a Hat Day fundraiser, students raised more than $530. During their shopping trip, students worked in groups to manage budgets, compare prices, make purchasing decisions, and ensure funds were spent wisely.

The Benefits of Service Learning

Service learning provides students with authentic opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to real-world situations. Through these projects, students develop:
• Leadership and teamwork skills
• Communication and collaboration abilities
• Problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
• Financial literacy through budgeting and fundraising
• Research and writing skills
• Civic responsibility and community awareness
• Empathy, kindness, and compassion for others

Most importantly, service learning helps students understand that even at a young age, they can make a meaningful impact. By identifying needs, planning solutions, and taking action, Garden Valley students learn the value of service while building the skills they will need to become successful learners, leaders, and community members.

At Garden Valley, we believe that Grizzlies make their school and community a better place. Through these service-learning projects, students see firsthand that small acts of kindness, hard work, and teamwork can create meaningful change. Whether they are helping animals, improving playgrounds, supporting classmates, showing gratitude to community helpers, or caring for local wildlife, our Grizzlies are learning that they each have the ability—and responsibility—to make a positive difference in the world around them. 🐻💚

🎓💚 Kindergarten Graduation 2026 💚🎓

On Friday, May 22 at 9:00 a.m., Garden Valley Elementary proudly celebrated our Kindergarten Graduation with the theme, Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Our kindergarten students did an outstanding job singing songs, reciting their lines, and sharing their excitement for the journey ahead. Dressed in their green caps and gowns, each student crossed the stage to receive their kindergarten diploma from Mrs. Haugen and Miss Johnson.

We are so proud of all they have learned and accomplished this year. Their smiles, confidence, and enthusiasm made for a memorable celebration for families, staff, and friends.

Congratulations, Kindergarten Class of 2026! We can't wait to see all the places you'll go as you continue your educational journey at Garden Valley. 💚🐻

On Tuesday, May 19, Garden Valley proudly celebrated our Fifth Grade Recognition for the Class of 2026 and future Class of 2033! This year’s theme, Oh, the Places You’ll Go, reminded us all of the exciting adventures, opportunities, and dreams waiting ahead for these students as they prepare for middle school.

The evening was filled with laughter, memories, and incredible student talent. Our talent show featured students playing recorders, bucket drums, piano, singing, dancing, and more. It was wonderful to see our students’ confidence, creativity, and personalities shine on stage! However, my favorite part of the evening was watching how this group of students supported one another during the talent portion part of the evening. 💚

We are so proud of this group and all they have accomplished during their time at Garden Valley. Congratulations to the Fifth Grade Class of 2026 — we can’t wait to see all the places you’ll go!

Once a Garden Valley Grizzly, always a Garden Valley Grizzly! 💚🐻

Today was a hard and emotional morning for a lot of students. Please give your kiddos a hug from us! 💚

I want to take a minute to wish you all a great summer break and thank you for being part of our school family!

Thank you for trusting us with your children! We can’t wait to see our returning students in August and are wishing well to the rest of our students moving or going onto new schools in the fall.

Watch for a recap of May events soon! There were so many fun things…teacher appreciation, ice cream truck, turning Mrs. Heser into an ice cream sundae, field trips, service learning projects, 5th grade recognition, kindergarten graduation, and so much more! Stay tuned!

Last week, the fourth graders completed their service learning project. They collected funds to create gratitude bags to foster gratitude and kindness. Bags went to local service workers like the police department, fire department Trinity Health. They also made a stop at Bethel home.

As part of the day they got short tours of the fire and police department. The students also placed kindness rocks in the park.

Thank you to Mrs. Clouse for organizing this service learning project for our 4th graders! 💚🐻
