We regret to announce the loss of one of our MSU Chicago family. On Thursday August 28th, Chief Warrant Officer Timothy E. Drury passed away at his home after a four-year battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Tim was a highly skilled Marine Inspector and Investigator, having participated in 1238 separate marine safety cases including more than 125 vessel inspections and over 1100 marine casualty investigations over the 11 years that he was on our team. His actions had a direct impact on the overall safety of the Marine Transportation System, including millions of passengers and crewmembers that enjoy, or work on, Chicagoland waterways. He was a respected leader, mentor, and friend. His legacy of service and dedication will forever be cherished and remembered by his Coast Guard family.

A Coast Guard cutter delivering Christmas trees? Why do they do that? We’d love to tell you! Chicago's Christmas Ship was founded in 2000 to honor the ROUSE SIMMONS, a ship that sank with all lives lost in the dangerous waters of Lake Michigan in 1912 on its way to deliver Christmas trees to be sold in Chicago. Today, the mighty U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw WLBB 30 delivers approximately 1,500 donated Christmas trees each year to spread joy to disadvantaged families in the Chicagoland area. MSU Chicago is honored to be a part of this tradition alongside our partners that make it possible!

Yesterday we had the pleasure of hosting Rear Admiral Hickey, who took over this summer as the Ninth District Commander. He is the senior Coast Guard Commander for the Great Lakes and Saint Lawrence Seaway, an area that encompasses eight states, a 1,500 mile international border, and a workforce of over 6,000 Coast Guard active duty, reserve, civilian and auxiliary men and women.

After we showed him around our newly renovated building (look out for a post about that soon!) Rear Admiral Hickey recognized Chief Warrant Officer Lovelace for the hard work he has put into the enforcement of commercial charter vessel regulations in the Chicago area and the education about commercial charter regulations for Coast Guard and industry personnel nation-wide. Bravo Zulu!

to our Marine Inspectors who have been busy this summer making sure the commercial vessels in and around Chicago comply with safety, security and pollution regulations.

This team of five spends long days over the summer conducting drills, looking over safety equipment and getting underway on boats throughout Chicago and Indiana. Take a look at what they’ve accomplished already this year to keep the public safe:

👉 20 dry dock inspections
👉 652 domestic vessel inspections
👉 12 foreign vessel inspections
👉 Approval for 6 new vessels to operate in
Chicago

Thank you for keeping the public and our environment safe.
