Last night one of the graveyard units stopped a vehicle for speeding near Hamilton City. It quickly became apparent that there were larger issues at hand as the officer detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage. After performing field sobriety tests, the driver agreed to perform a preliminary alcohol screening test. The results were over four times the legal limit. The driver was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

DUI arrests in Glenn County are up this year. If you are going to drink, plan a way to get home that does not include you getting behind the wheel of a vehicle.

We had a fantastic time yesterday at Thunderhill Raceway for Taste of the Track. It was a great opportunity for people to to try out their daily driver on a racetrack. We saw a lot of driving that would have definitely qualified for a ticket on the roads, but on the track, it was not only legal, but encouraged. As always, getting to meet and chat with the people who attended was a highlight of the day. Thank you to Eric Diamond for organizing this event and inviting us to participate.

For those of you who missed out this year, watch for Taste of the Track next year. If you want to push your car a little bit, this is the place to do it, not on the open road.

At first glance, you may believe this crash on 6th Avenue near County Road 9 yesterday evening was caused by a beautiful sunset distracting the driver. While you would be correct that that the sunset was beautiful, the investigating officer formed the opinion that the driver's high blood alcohol concentration was the actual cause of the crash.

Apparently, the driver hit it big at the casino, but his luck ran out on the way home. Don't count on luck to get you home after an evening of drinking. Have a plan that starts with a sober driver rather than a plan that ends with you in jail.

Just after 6:00 this morning, CHP dispatch received calls of a crash on Interstate 5 north of County Road 27. The investigating officers determined that the single vehicle rollover occurred as the driver was traveling southbound and looked down at a navigation app on her cell phone which was in her lap. When she looked up, she had drifted dangerously close to another vehicle and swerved to avoid hitting it. She lost control of her vehicle which crossed through the center divide and overturned. The vehicle continued across both northbound lanes before coming to rest on the right shoulder. The driver and passenger were both wearing their seatbelts. The passenger, who appeared to have minor injuries, was taken to Enloe Medical Center to be checked out.

At the 70 mph the driver stated she was traveling, in one second, a vehicle travels 102 feet. When a driver looks away from the road to check something on her phone, on average, that glance takes approximately 3 seconds. That means that in the time it takes to look at the phone, on average a car has traveled the length of a football field without the driver's eyes being on the road. As was demonstrated this morning, a lot can happen in that time and distance.

One of the great side benefits of working for the California Highway Patrol is being able to stop for a minute and take in the natural beauty of California from the side of the road, in this case, a Glenn County sunset.

A motorist on I-5 called 911 this morning to report a possibly intoxicated driver in Colusa County that was headed our way. We were able to locate and arrest the driver for driving under the influence of drugs and being in possession of drugs and related paraphernalia. This incident follows the trend we have been seeing of an increase in drug related DUIs this summer.

If you see someone you suspect of driving under the influence, give us a call. We can't be everywhere, but with help from other drivers, our ability to find and remove impaired drivers from the road is multiplied.

We extend our thanks to the citizen who helped us located this person before he injured someone.

This morning we had another example of the dangers of distracted driving. A Ford Fusion was traveling southbound on 99W and had stopped to wait for northbound traffic to clear before turning onto Wyo Road. A Ford F-150 was coming up behind and didn't realize the Fusion had stopped ahead until it was too late and plowed into the back of it. The occupants of the Fusion had minor injuries. The driver and passengers of the F-150 were okay.

We live in a world that is full of distractions. Put them away for the time it takes you to drive to your destination to ensure you get there without hurting yourself or someone else.

Following this early morning crash on I-5 northbound near County Road 28, the uninjured driver was less than forthright about what transpired. The evidence at the scene indicated he was traveling in the northbound lanes when he drifted off the road and struck the oleander hedge. His car overturned and came to rest on the southbound side of the hedge but stopped short of the opposite lanes.

Once again, the oleander hedge proved to be more than a visually appealing addition to the freeway as it kept another vehicle from crossing into oncoming traffic.

Far too often, we see inattention while driving result in crashes. As you are driving, keep your attention on the task at hand. A brief moment of distraction can quickly translate into tragedy.
