Have you ever wondered what California Highway Patrol driver's training, or Emergency Vehicle Operation Course (EVOC) as we call it, looks like? The following video shows the CHP Academy's "Skid Pan" which is a slow speed, flooded track that helps develop skills at maintaining control of a patrol vehicle in slippery conditions.

In this predictable crash on County Road D, south of County Road 57, a father without a driver's license was attempting to teach his 13 year old daughter how to drive. She lost control of the vehicle which left the roadway, overturned in a ditch, and caught fire.

As we are in the midst of the statewide Click it or Ticket campaign, we would be remiss if we failed to mention that the one lesson the father successfully taught his young daughter as she began her premature driving career was to buckle up. Thanks to that wise instruction, injuries were prevented.

Over half of the traffic fatalities in Glenn County involve unrestrained individuals. In order to reduce these preventable deaths in our county, as well as across the state, the California Highway Patrol is putting an extra emphasis on seat belt enforcement from May 18-31 as part of the national Click it or Ticket campaign.

Before you drive, put on your seat belt and make sure your passengers are buckled up as well. Seat belts save lives.

Come down to our booth at the Glenn County Fair today or tomorrow and say hi and try out our Drunk Goggles. They simulate the effects alcohol has on a person performing field sobriety tests whose blood alcohol concentration is approximately 08%. It’s a good reminder not to drink and drive and is a good opportunity to laugh at your friends.

California Vehicle code 21809 requires motorists to move over into an adjacent lane if safe, or to slow down, when passing a stationary road maintenance vehicle, or tow truck displaying orange hazard warning lights, or a stationary emergency vehicle with emergency lights activated.

Give them a brake! Their kids and families will appreciate it.

The California Highway Patrol's Maximum Enforcement Period last Tuesday resulted in the issuance of over 19,564 citations and 2,807 warnings statewide. Of the citations issued, 11,767 were for speeding with 200 being for speeding over 100 miles per hour. Last year in California, speeding was a contributing factor in over 110,000 crashes. Of those crashes, there were over 400 speed related fatalities and 68,000 injuries. The next time you're tempted to open up the throttle on the highway, keep in mind the risks that come from driving at excessive speeds.

The California Highway Patrol will conduct a 24-hour Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP) focused on speeding to help reduce serious and fatal crashes across California. The MEP begins at 6 a.m. on April 28 and ends at 5:59 a.m. on April 29. The enforcement effort will take place throughout the day and night, emphasizing that there is no safe time or place to drive at unsafe speeds.

During the operation, officers will monitor roadways and take enforcement action against drivers who exceed posted speed limits or travel at unsafe speeds for the conditions. Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to react to changing traffic conditions and greatly increases the severity of crashes. Even a slight increase in speed can significantly affect the outcome of a crash.
