YOU'RE LESS LIKELY TO DIE IN A 🔥 IF...

Working smoke alarms reduce 📉 your chance of dying in a fire in your home by more than HALF. 🤯

We know that... and STILL, many people live in homes that are unprotected. 🤷‍♂️

In North Carolina, there have already been 5️⃣4️⃣ home fire deaths this year. According to @nc_osfm, most of those deaths were in homes that didn't have working smoke alarms.

At the Wilmington Fire Department, we think even 1 home fire death is too many. That's why we partnered with @ncdoi for Smoke Alarm Saturday & canvassed area neighborhoods 🏡 to educate our community on the importance of working smoke alarms & smoke alarm maintenance.

ALL SHORED UP 🪓🗜

Multiple companies trained at Station 2 on shoring. Shoring can be used in many different ways.

For example, if a car went into a building 🚗🏨, which happens more than you think. 🤔 Or if there is building damage after a storm. 🌩

Firefighters use different tools to shore things up, like pieces and blocks of wood, clamps, and rope.

Each incident is different so the training focuses on different methods of shoring and how to apply them in different circumstances.

🚨FIRE DEPARTMENT APP NOW LIVE🚨

The Wilmington Fire Department is excited to announce the release of the organization’s new smartphone 📱 app. The app serves as a new way for WFD to connect with residents & responders, providing information quickly & efficiently to anyone with a smartphone.

The app is launching this month to coincide with the beginning of Atlantic Hurricane 🌊 Season. It provides the capability to send out push notifications 📲, which is an added resource in communicating with the public in times of emergency. The app also allows users to communicate back to the department through different forms & surveys.

Communicating with the public is essential before, during, & after severe weather 🌩 events. The app is synced with the National Weather Service & sends out alerts for specific extreme & severe weather events in our area.

“We are very excited about the launch of our mobile app,” said Fire Chief Buddy Martinette. “The world is trending more & more towards a technology-based approach to communications & connecting with community members. This app will allow us to serve our citizens in a myriad of ways.”

The newly released Wilmington Fire Department App is now in the App Store and Google Play! Just search 🔍 “Wilmington Fire”.

Is learning allowed to be this fun? 🤔

The Citizens Academy is back up and running! Last week, the group met at Station 5 to learn about our EMS capabilities and HazMat team.

They even got to try on the HazMat suits! We run the Citizens Academy twice a year, in the spring and the fall. Be on the look out for when we open the fall session!

SERIOUS FIRE DANGER PRESENT IN WILMINGTON & NEW HANOVER COUNTY

New Hanover County Fire Rescue and Wilmington Chiefs chat about the current fire danger that threatens our communities.

The lack of precipitation plus the warm temperatures contribute to an increased risk for fire ignition and spread.

“We’re asking people to be extra vigilant right now,” said WFD Fire Chief Buddy Martinette. “It only takes a small spark for a fire to start while weather conditions are so hot and dry.”

“To aid in these precautions, we are also instituting a burning ban in New Hanover County until further notice,” said NHCFR Deputy Chief Frank Meyer.

A reminder that open burning is never allowed in the City of Wilmington, NC. This includes burning yard debris and bonfires. The only exception to the rule is if you are cooking, but even then, it must be in an approved cooking container like a gas grill and charcoal grill.

Often the cause of outside or brush fires is improperly discarded smoking materials. We ask that you be mindful of where and how you dispose of your cigarette butts. They should never be thrown on the ground/road, in a dumpster/trashcan, or in landscaping/potted plants.

A LESSON ON WHY PT 🏃 IS IMPORTANT

The recruit academy trains hard for six long months. They learn all sorts of information and skills. But they also train hard to get into “firefighter shape”.

This video was captured during one of their physical fitness training sessions. It very clearly describes why firefighters need to be in good physical shape.

After running and climbing 8 flights of stairs, the recruits are understandably tired. The firefighter leading them asks them if they think the firefighters on 9/11 were all in shape. He asks them if they think any of the firefighters thought about how challenging it was to go up all those flights of stairs.

The answer is no. As a first responder, you’re only thinking about the person at the top of the stairs that you signed up to help. As a first responder, it’s not about you anymore. It’s about them. And that’s why it’s important for firefighters to be in good physical shape. So you can go the extra mile and help your neighbors and citizens in their time of need.

AIR SHOW ✈ CRASH 💥 AT NHC AIRPORT

Today we're throwing it back to September 25, 1961 when a plane crashed during an air show at the New Hanover County Airport.

The two-engine propeller plane was carrying members of the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights parachute team from XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg for a skydiving exhibition before an audience of nearly 100,000 people. The air show was sponsored by Wilmington TV station WECT News in cooperation with the Civil Air Patrol and had been an annual event since 1958.

The tragic crash killed 3 people: Air Force Capt. John E. Markel, co-pilot; Technical Sgt. John M. Lesso, flight engineer; and S-5 Robert T. Turner, an Army photographer from Fort Bragg.

Several were injured, as well, including cameramen and photographers from local news organizations.

This horrible accident is what we would call a low-frequency, high-risk incident. Meaning these types of calls don't happen very often, but when they do, they present a high level of risk and difficulty.

As a first responder, it's our responsibility to maintain a high level of readiness for all types of emergencies. That's why we're always training to keep our skills sharp and our equipment ready for whatever the day may bring.

Information regarding crash pulled from StarNews.
