“The NICU changes you.

You learn what every alarm means.
You memorize numbers on monitors.
You celebrate a few extra milliliters.
You learn that holding your own baby isn’t always guaranteed.

You go home without them.
Or you don’t go home at all.
You watch nurses care for your baby.
And you hope for the day you can finally take them home.

Some NICU stays are days.
Some are months.
Some babies come home.
Some never get the chance.

This month is for every tiny fighter and every NICU parent who will carry that experience forever.”

September is NICU awareness month. We honor & remember all of our NICU families we have been able to support & thank the incredible NICU nurses across the state we have been able to cross paths with.🤍

📋Here are our top 6️⃣ essential postpartum supplies to have on hand:

💦Perineal Care Items: Stock up on perineal spray, soothing ice pack pads & witch hazel pads to provide comfort and relief after childbirth.

🩸Maxi Pads: Opt for heavy-flow maxi pads designed for postpartum use. They provide great coverage and absorbency during the first initial weeks.

🩲Comfortable Underwear: Invest in high-waisted, soft, & stretchy underwear that accommodates postpartum pads and doesn’t irritate your healing body. A frequently used brand from our clients is Always Discrete & there’s even an Always Discrete Postpartum underwear you can find at your local Target, Walmart, CVS or Walgreens.

🥥Nipple Cream: If you’re breastfeeding, a good-quality ni**le cream can provide relief from soreness
and help prevent chapping. A top recommended option is just straight up organic virgin coconut oil.

🧴Hemorrhoid Cream & Stool Softeners: These can be a lifesaver if you’re dealing with post-birth constipation. Consult your healthcare provider before using any medications.

💊Prenatal Vitamins: Continue taking your prenatal vitamins, as they support your body’s recovery and
provide essential nutrients for breastfeeding if applicable.

Postpartum prep + recovery is so much more than what you could ever find in a list. Reach out today to get connected with one of our doulas to walk with you through this journey to help you find what’s right for you! 🤍

If the nesting instinct is hitting you hard, here are a few household projects to consider adding to your to-do list to help ease the transition.👶🏽

🛏️Create Your Sanctuary
While decking out the baby’s room might be more exciting, remember that in those initial weeks, you’ll likely be spending a lot more time in your bedroom. With all the well-deserved resting, your bed will become a haven. Transform your bedroom into a serene and soothing space where you can unwind and catch some much needed sleep.

🧷Strategic Diaper Stations
Newborns are quite productive when it comes to diaper changes😉. Around 12 times a day usually. To make life easier for your future self, set up multiple diaper-changing stations across your home. Consider having one in your bedroom, living room, and the baby’s nursery. Fill these stations with essentials like diapers, wipes, extra onesies, receiving blankets, and a laundry and garbage bag. Having these necessities within easy reach can be a lifesaver, especially if you’ve had a c-section and moving around is a bit challenging.

🧺Appliance Prep
Get ready to put your major appliances to the test because your washer, dryer, dishwasher, and hot water heater are in for some serious action. It’s a good idea to give them a little check up before the baby arrives. Clean out your dryer ducts, change filters, & ensure everything is in good working order. Trust us, you won’t want to find yourself without a functional washer or dryer with a newborn in the mix. It’s all about being prepared!

Alright. We know you wanna know. To be honest, even with all the experience we have as doulas, we can be nosey and sometimes we wanna know too. However, the reality is it doesn’t matter if you know because it really doesn’t matter, ya know?🙃

A cervical check only tells you what the status of your cervix at that very point in time and did you know it can differ from person to person depending on who’s checking you? It can’t predict when labor will start, what will happen next or how much longer you have to go. Sometimes a cervical check can feel defeating & sometimes it can be encouraging. It truly depends on each individual situation!

There’s so much more happening (or that needs to happen in starting labor & labor itself) than just dilation alone. If you’re at the end of your pregnancy wanting a cervical check, be sure to ask for your bishop score which will give you more information you can discuss with your provider!🤍

One of the most empowering decisions you’ll make is where to give birth. Whether it’s the coziness of your home, the nurturing environment of a birth center, or the advanced medical care of a hospital, your choice should reflect your comfort, needs, and desires.🏡🏥

Home births offer familiarity, surrounded by your own space and energy. Birth centers provide a gentle atmosphere with skilled support. Hospitals offer medical resources for high-risk situations.

Your birthing place is as unique as you are! 🌈
It’s important to explore your options, gather information, and have open conversations with your care team. Consider factors like your health, birth philosophy, and support network.

Your doula team is here to help facilitate an intimate & peaceful space for you regardless of where you give birth! Trust your instincts and know that no matter where you choose, your birthing experience is a journey that you’re creating with love.🤱
