While cities like Whiteville and Carolina Beach are doing more to bring public art to their streets its a different story in Wilmington where a local business owner is fighting to keep artwork on the side of his bar after Wilmington’s Historic Preservation Committee deemed it a sign, and called fo...
Well we didn’t have a chance to chase them down the street but we got hit with a dine n dash couple around 3:00pm today. The Washington Football Team jersey should be easy to spot so be on the look out downtown peeps.
Why hasn’t the city stepped up to help a business that has been shuttered for almost seven months?! Last time I checked, allowing restaurants to assemble tables and chairs up and down the sidewalk and out in the streets isn’t historical. Do they only care about restaurants and retail during these difficult times? Step up your game mayor Saffo and the rest of the funky bunch on city council or we will all vote you out the first chance we get.
Last month the City of Wilmington’s Historic Preservation Committee voted to deny a request that would have allowed a mural painted on the stairwell wall leading to a local bar, the Pour House, claiming the artwork was a violation of city code and is considered a sign.
Heads up folks. Stay far, far away from this place!

Wilmington City Council has announced that Short Term Rental restrictions will move toward ordinance (see Wilmington.gov). What they're writing into law basically renders STRs non-viable and still doesn't reflect public input (reasonable regulations).
Though they've been disregarding of citizen perspective to this point, the only way we can now have a shot at shaping this ordinance is to get more involved.
We've heard from you that you've attended public input meetings, and you've signed the petitions, (to no avail), yet there are more crucial actions needed now in this final month if we want to keep STRs.
TONIGHT: Show up at planning commission meeting Wednesday May 3rd, 6:30 PM at 102 N. 3rd (in order to create pressure with our presence).
THIS WEEK: Call and leave voice mails for council members Anderson, Sheridan, Rivenbark and Mayor Saffo (O'Grady, Haynes and Lawler are driving STR elimination so no need to contact them) with the following possible thoughts:
A. "Severe restrictions are not what the public or the rest of the city wants (reflects special downtown interests)."
B) "STR ordinance should start with least restrictive (registration, occupancy tax collection and 3 violations limit). If that form isn't working, the ordinance can be amended."
C). "Many US cities are "rolling back" STR regulations. Don't waste tax payer dollars creating something that's so severe that they'll have to be undone later."
D) "We expect a reasonable and representative council and ordinance."
NEXT WEEK: We'll keep you posted. As council tries to get limits on STRs finalized by June 7th, it will take all of us taking action to keep STRs alive in ILM.
