In May of 2025, Raleigh police launched the hospitality district to boost safety in the high-traffic areas in downtown Raleigh, including the areas around the GoRaleigh bus station.

Raleigh Police Chief Rico Boyce also addressed council members and said, "Since we started the Hospitality district and we have a dedicated group of officers working in that area, we now have quarterly meetings that we are going to step up to monthly meetings. And that is important, so we know what's going on from all aspects of security in the transit mall."

GoRaleigh transit has seen its share of safety concerns. The City of Raleigh is working on a plan to make the buses and the bus station safer.

HOMICIDE SUSPECT IN CUSTODY FOLLOWING WPD INVESTIGATION

After an extensive investigation by the WPD Criminal Investigation Division, 47-year-old Davy Spencer of Wilmington is in custody and is facing multiple charges including Second Degree Murder and two counts of Assault with a Deadly Weapon with the Intent to Kill. This arrest is in connection to a recent homicide that occurred in downtown Wilmington.

Around 2:00 a.m. last Sunday morning, officers responded to reports of multiple fights in the 100 block of North Front Street. During the incident, 21-year-old Daniel Montano was stabbed by the suspect and succumbed to his injuries despite life-saving efforts.

Bond information for Davy Spencer is not available at this time.
