Hagley history is American history. Starting this weekend, visitors can explore new America250 story panels throughout our grounds, each revealing a different connection between Hagley and America’s first 250 years.

In a new Delaware Online “Open Call” column, Mike Adams, Director and Chief Creative Officer of Hagley Museum and Library, shares how Hagley connects to larger stories of Delaware and the United States, from the Brandywine mills and DuPont powder works to pivotal moments in American history like the construction of the Erie Canal and Transcontinental Railroad.

Special tours, talks, and programs continue the celebration of this milestone anniversary for our country throughout the summer.

Just in time for Memorial Day weekend, Hagley’s Oriental Poppies (Papaver orientale) are in full bloom in the E. I. du Pont Garden.

Poppies symbolize remembrance and resilience, offering a meaningful reminder of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

When you visit Hagley this weekend, be sure to look for them in the garden and take a moment to reflect on those who helped protect our independence as we approach America250.

Memorial Day weekend is a meaningful time to experience Hagley as we begin our celebration of America250.

Along the Brandywine, the stories here connect to some of the most pivotal moments in American history—from the building of the Transcontinental Railroad to the Civil War and beyond.

New outdoor story panels will bring a few of these connections to life—offering a glimpse into the people, industries, and ideas that helped shape the nation.

And that’s just the beginning.

Explore the grounds at your own pace or join a guided walking tour to uncover even more—alongside cannon firings, an exhibition on 19th-century inventions, and a STEM activity that will cause quite a commotion (5/23).

As a thank you to those who have served our country, we offer free admission to active duty militiary members, veterans and retirees during Memorial Day weekend. Through the National Endowment for the Arts' Blue Star Museums program, free admission extends to up to five family members of active duty military members! Learn more: https://pulse.ly/w6lbvgkwv8

Please note: some of these activities are weather-dependent.

Thank you to the American Alliance of Museums' 2026 Annual Meeting attendees who braved the heat to take a special, offsite tour in Wilmington this morning called "Making Museums: Hagley, Winterthur, and the Invention of the Modern House Museum." We enjoyed showing the group around Hagley's E. I. du Pont Garden and the Eleutherian Mills Residence while sharing stories of the pioneering preservation work of siblings Louise du Pont Crowninshield and Henry Francis du Pont.

Heading to the conference? Remember to Show Your Badge to receive free admission to Hagley Museum through May 24!
