💜 Knowing how to respond can help save a life.

Someone experiencing an opioid overdose may be unable to help themselves, making it critical for those around them to recognize the emergency and take action.

If you suspect an opioid overdose:

Call 911 immediately.
Administer naloxone or nalmefene if available.
Stay with the person until emergency help arrives.

Naloxone is an FDA-approved opioid overdose reversal medication available over the counter. Being prepared and knowing what to do can make a lifesaving difference when every second matters.

Always take medications exactly as directed, and talk with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have questions about how to take them safely.

Never mix pain medications with alcohol, sleeping pills or illicit substances, and never take medication that wasn’t prescribed to you.

Small steps toward medication safety can help prevent accidental overdose. Know your medications. Ask questions. Use them safely.

Opioid overdose reversal medications (OORMs) are FDA-approved medications designed to quickly reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Two FDA-approved options are naloxone and nalmefene.

These medications can be used in overdoses involving opioids such as fentanyl, he**in, oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine and morphine.

Knowing about these lifesaving tools, and having access to them, can make all the difference when every second counts.

💜 Understanding what happens during an opioid overdose can help us recognize the seriousness of an emergency and why acting quickly matters.

An opioid overdose, sometimes called opioid poisoning, occurs when the body has more opioids than it can safely process. Opioids can affect the part of the brain that controls breathing, causing breathing to become dangerously slow or stop altogether. Without intervention, this can lead to unconsciousness, brain injury or death.

Awareness saves lives. Knowing what an overdose is is the first step toward knowing how to respond.

💜 It saves lives. Awareness equips people with the knowledge to recognize the signs of an overdose, respond quickly, and connect others to lifesaving resources.

💜 It reduces stigma. Compassionate conversations help replace judgment with understanding, making it easier for people to seek support when they need it most.

💜 It strengthens our community. When we come together to educate, support, and care for one another, we create a safer, healthier community where hope can thrive.

Overdose Awareness Week begins August 24, and over the next few weeks, we'll be joining communities across the country in raising awareness, sharing resources, and encouraging conversations that can make a difference.

This campaign is about more than education; it's about hope. It's about honoring lives, supporting individuals and families affected by substance use, reducing stigma, and empowering our community with knowledge that could one day save a life.
